I was sitting in the backyard and noticed something red and round going up a tree.
Upon closer observation, I saw that it was a squirrel that had stolen one of my tomatoes and was hauling it to a limb for dinner.

I've decided to pick all my tomatoes when ripe and not let them hang on the vine. I told the squirrel to gather the walnuts instead. We'll see.

You can pick them before they are ripe. There is nothing to that "vine-ripened" stuff. As soon as they are showing a little red, it is safe to bring them inside and let them ripen on the counter. They will be just as good as if you let them ripen on the vine.

I happen to know this because I had to write an article on tomato ripening.
