(19,459 posts)The surface was blackened, and the details scooped out to expose the redwood interior.
This was taken in a gallery in Mendocino, an exhibition of a recently deceased artist's work set up by his wife.
I was taken with the way the artwork framed the passageway door, and accentuated the colors and shapes on the stair landing. I also like the way the interior and exterior newel posts reflected each other. I assume these things were taken into consideration when placing the carvings, given that placement is such an important aspect of exhibiting art.
Perhaps it was just a matter of serendipity.
We love the Mendocino area and try to visit a few times a year. Lots of nice campgrounds in the redwoods and along the coast, and it's only a couple of hours from us.
