Photobomb with American Lady butterfly

[link:|

I originally thought this was a Painted Lady when I was photographing her, but it's actually an American Lady (two eyespots on wing, rather than four). I'm not sure what the photobomber is; I only noticed him in this one frame.

Any ideas for me?

1. A type of hornet?

Looks similar to the Bald-Faced Hornet shown here:

and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bald-faced_hornet

Beautiful butterfly shot!.......

4. Thanks, Kentucky!

I'd not heard of a bald-faced hornet before.

I was in southern MD for a weekend last June and only had my small Canon S120 with me because I didn't want to lug around one of my big cameras. Unfortunate decision, as it turned out.

5. Thanks, Botany!

I believe you're correct.

I majored in botany at Kalamazoo College a lifetime ago; though we were the "hornets," the only things bald-faced about us were our lies.

3. This photo put a smile on my face.

Sometimes there are surprises like this one after viewing a photo! And a very nice surprise too!

6. Thanks, Calla!

Serendipity can be splendid.

I can't believe that so many people in our country don't seem to care that their grandchildren might not ever be able to enjoy the fragile beauties of Mother Nature that will disappear because of the unfortunate consequences of deliberate choices *they* are making now.

I fear that serendipity for those who come after us may have far fewer opportunities to be splendid.
