Tomorrow people come to fix my front gutters so I had to place another hook and rehang by basket in a safer location, away from all the repair work on Monday. In the process I got some some more photos of the bird nest. All eggs hatched - 5.

But now that the momma bird and I have gotten a really good look at each other, I know they are House Finches.
I misidentified the eggs as well - to begin with - but now I know better.

(115,673 posts)I've been getting a lot of them on my feeders lately.

(14,489 posts)I think I like them because they're so good-natured compared to most others on my feeders. They don't seem to have a care in the world, LOL. Occasionally get a few Goldfinches as a special treat.
House Finch babies must be very tiny. About what size is the nest?
Thanks for the great shots!...... ......

(90,762 posts)I love them, too! I love all birds. Some do behave better than others at the feeding station.
Thanks!

(14,489 posts)I keep four or five hanging pots in back of my place with big spider plants, and some birds like to nest in those. I think Wrens or Finches but I never get to see them. Just see the small nests in the fall when I bring my plants indoors.
Chickadees are one of my favorites too, because they talk to (or fuss at) me from the trees, LOL.
Wild birds and music are the very best anti-depressants!.....

I can sit and watch "my birds" all day...and have.

(28,118 posts)Watched three flitter around my kitchen windows this afternoon.
They loved my door wreath which I had to take down last year because two flew into the house and it took us forever to help them find their way out.

(14,489 posts)I hate when one gets in the house because I'm afraid they will get hurt or over-stressed. I usually leave a door wide open and cut back on lighting from windows and electric lights, and then they find their way out by going to the daylight.
Our little wrens are the cutest of all. They find their way into a screened-in porch at one of my friend's house, explore for a while and always find their way out. Just like curious little kids!

(149,583 posts)I have to say, though, they look quite reptilian. I know they'll improve with feathers and time!
I'm wondering what camera/lens combo were you using? Looks like you were practically in the nest!
Good job!

I grabbed everything handy since a bad storm gave me an actual excuse to bother the babies.
The storm damaged my gutters.
I had the basket down on a table while my husband got the other hook ready.
They aren't too far from the original spot and the momma bird doesn't seem to mind.

(90,762 posts)They already live in my flowers and there's plenty of food and water out back.
I also live in a national forest so that helps. Lots of loblollies and longleaf pine.
But, yeah...people.

I was upset about the repairs and then I grabbed everything handy and went outside.
D and I took our time putting the new hook up.
