Photo editing software.

I'm looking for something inexpensive, if not free. Mainly just looking for basic functions. I currently use Photoshop Express. Before that I was using ViewNix II and preferred it. Express is free and ViewNix came with a camera I purchased a couple of year ago.

Thank you very much.

I used GIMP for long time & went to Photoshop for 16 bit color. I think GIMP has switched to 16 bit. Bernardo de La Paz May 2017 #5

8 bit per channel suffices for most internet work, and a lot of casual photography equipment (cell phone cameras, for example) are noisier than that, effectively as low as five or six bits per channel for some, and still subject to all the further limitations of Bayer filtering.

ViewNix 2: http://www.nikonusa.com/en/nikon-products/product/imaging-software/viewnx-2.html

I use Photoshop and PaintShop Pro, but those cost bucks.

I also use the free IrfanView, which doesn't have the learning curve that Gimp might.

IrfanView: http://www.irfanview.com/

IrfanView is best if the plugins are downloaded and installed, too. I've had no trouble with adware and unwanted programs and shit when I have download IrfanView from MajorGeeks: http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/irfanview.html

In the end, which program you use depends on what you need to do with your images. There are many cloud-based (web sites) that will do simple image editing.

and, while it's not as user friendly as Photoshop, it's got a lot of the same features.

Photoscape and gimp are also good. They all have their strengths and weaknesses but pretty much comes down to which interface you prefer

It's called Affinity Photo and it's $50, for Windows and Mac. It's fully compatible with Photoshop but it's a standalone app, not a subscription.

Not sure what kind of photo editing you're going to be doing but I have started using Lightroom. It works well with Photoshop for double editing purposes.

For $10 per month I have access to both Lightroom and Photoshop.
