Sony has produced a camera module that uses smartphones as the camera interface.

Ricoh first introduced a sensor/lens module, and Sony ran with the idea. The GXR was a critical success, but the price put it out of reach for many.

1. So, would that be the film-equivalent of putting

a Hasselblad or Leica lens on an Instamatic camera?

By the looks of the bulky size of that lens add-on, you might as well carry around a slim point-and-shoot. Unless the CCD in your average smartphone is also equivalent to a small point-and-shoot? I don't know such details as I never use the camera in my semi-smart phone.

2. The Sony has the same sensor as the Sony RX100, and that is a good thing.

It lacks many features of the RX100, but the image quality should be there.

Both the QX10 and QX100 are full-blown cameras.

9. Okay, so it's not as I originally thought from the initial description of the "lens."

These are remote-cameras controlled by a smart-phone. It had seemed more like some kind of weird physical bypass of the actual lens on the smartphone into the add-on lens.

The photo in your link needs to say as much, too, instead of their "Lens in one hand, smartphone in the other" caption. It's misleading.

I like the feel and smell of books. I reach for paper first always.

10. I already basically work this way

I use a high end P&S and a wifi card with my iphone, it gives me the best of both worlds, better picture quality and the ability to edit and publish on the spot. What Sony has done is marry the technologies in a more integrated package and I'm tempted to get my hands on one.

12. Go big with it. I'm six to nine months away from a new camera.

I first need to get over the shock of a new refrigerator and property taxes. I heal slowly.

14. I think where it really shines

Is for video, I have a bit of a project coming up where I need to film interviews and with this system I can have the camera on a tripod and use the iPhone to view the scene untethered and remotely control the camera.
