(16,858 posts)His drums on both are iconic but I can't hear that opening of "Wouldn't it be nice" without thinking of him!

(16,858 posts)There is a movie called "Love and Mercy" about Brian Wilson and the film captures nicely the feel of the studios then and has a scene that focuses on "the Wrecking Crew"'s work on "Wouldn't it be nice" and the Pet Sounds Sessions.

JW: Did you go in?
HB: Yes. When I arrived, the Carpenters parents were there. You could tell right away they ruled the roost. We started to run through the song, Weve Only Just Begun. But Karen was singing way too high. I stopped the session and took Karen aside.
JW: What did you say?
HB: I said, Look, Karen, I dont want to bug you with this, but youre singing way up high. You speak mid-range, which is much better for your singing voice. Why dont you try it?
JW: Did she agree?
HB: At first her parents cut in and insisted that up high was the way she sang. I said to her, Try taking it down three keys. So she did, and the rest is history [laughs].
America is one of my favorite songs ever, thanks for posting

It's kinda weird, but this is hitting me pretty hard, losing Hal today.
I saw Nancy Sinatra's tweet about Hal last Friday, asking basically for good vibes for Hal, but even knowing that something bad was happening, I am truly saddened by Hal's passing.
The good thing is, in the long run, the music will always cheer me up whenever I hear it.
