TCM Schedule for Thursday, May 10, 2018 -- What's On Tonight: Star of the Month Marlene Dietrich

In the daylight hours, TCM's series on movie serials continues with Bomba the Jungle Boy, starring Boy (aka Johnny Sheffield, who played the son of Tarzan and Jane). Then in prime time, TCM begins the films of Star of the Month Marlene Dietrich. Enjoy!

Bomba the Jungle Boy arrives to rescue a child just as a volcano is about to erupt.

Sheffield's costar in this film, Beverly Garland, later on a ton of television series, including My Three Sons (1960-1972), as stepmother Barbara Harper Douglas.


6:45 PM -- LORD OF THE JUNGLE (1955)
The jungle boy tries to stop a herd of rogue elephants.

This would be the final film for Johnny Sheffield. He would pass away 55 years later without appearing in another movie.

A stodgy professor falls from grace when he's seduced by a nightclub singer.

This English-language version was considered a lost film for many years, until a print was discovered in a German film archive. This version has been restored and shown as part of the Berlin and Beyond film festival at the Castro Theater in San Francisco on 19 January 2009.

A young innocent masters the decadent ways of Imperial Russia in order to reign as Catherine the Great.

A beautiful temptress re-kindles an old romance while trying to escape her past during a tension-packed train journey.

Winner of an Oscar for Best Cinematography -- Lee Garmes

Nominee for Oscars for Best Director -- Josef von Sternberg, and Best Picture

In her autobiography, Marlene Dietrich claimed that von Sternberg directed most of the cinematography, instead of Lee Garmes (who actually won an Oscar for his work on the film).

This short film visits the city of Algiers in Algeria, and the cities of Casablanca, Rabat, and Marrakesh in Morocco.

Nominee for Oscars for Best Actress in a Leading Role -- Marlene Dietrich, Best Director -- Josef von Sternberg, Best Cinematography -- Lee Garmes, and Best Art Direction -- Hans Dreier

The infamous scene where Marlene Dietrich kisses another woman - which was added to the script at Dietrich's suggestion - was saved from being cut by the censors by Dietrich herself: she came up with the idea of taking a flower from the woman before kissing her and then giving the flower to Gary Cooper, explaining that if the censors cut the kiss the appearance of the flower would make no sense.

A nightclub singer gives in to a rich playboy to finance her husband's medical treatment.

Cast: Marlene Dietrich, Herbert Marshall, Cary Grant

Cary Grant said that Josef von Sternberg directed him not really much during the filming, but taught him the most important thing. On the first day Grant came on the set, von Sternberg looked at him and said, "Your hair is parted on the wrong side." So Grant parted it on the other side and kept it that way the rest of his career.

...to miss these. My cable co took TCM off and want me to pay a big price to restore the movie channel... it was my favorite.
