USPS Continues the Program with Staples to put Mini Post Offices in their stores

Aug. 27, 2014 (San Diego) The American Postal Workers Union (APWU), though their representative in Washington D.C. has informed Reporting San Diego that the privatization effort continues. According to Sally Davidow, when the American Federation of Teachers joined the “don’t buy Staples” movement, this created fear with both the United States Postal Service Management and Staples.

This is why July 14 they announced the end of the program, replacing it with an approved shipper program, which is similar to what Office Depot has. This was an attempt to end the boycott against the retailer.

What will the program allow? It will allow for Staples employees, making half of what a postal worker makes, to handle your mail. Moreover, Staples workers make half of the salary of the USPS workers, they are not as well trained, and they do not go through a background check like USPS workers do. There is also a very high turnover rate at Staples.

APWU president said, Staples and the USPS are changing the name of the program, without addressing the fundamental concerns of postal workers and postal customers.”

I buy things from Staples, but I have a membership (free) that I can get whatever I want sent to mu house with no shipping charges, and it's delivered the next day. I would NEVER go to Staples for my postal needs. The only people I can see doing that are people who live or work closer to Staples than a Post Office. I honest;ly don't see the PO losing any significant business with this deal.

The post office closes at 5 by my house so I ship UPS. If shipping through staples is cheaper than UPS Ill go there.

Although I admit I've never been in a Staples and haven't used the Post Office in years.

But it's the thought that counts.

What a backwards step for America if the USPS were privatized to "for-profit" status.

Which, of course, is the goal of the Republicans and their corporate masters.

Where else in the world do we get this unmatched service for this remarkable low cost? Why would we give that up? This is what government is for. The common good. The general welfare.

Not for maximus profitus.

without addressing the fundamental concerns of postal workers and postal customers."

THIS is the capitalist way and since this is a capitalist ploy to privatize a service that's been around for a couple of centuries now, it shouldn't be surprising to anybody.
