GERING, Neb. — The family of a corrections officer killed by an inmate in February is pursuing safety improvements at the Scotts Bluff County Detention Center through the filing of a wrongful-death claim.

The family of Amanda Baker notified Scotts Bluff County of its intent to file a wrongful death claim this week. Baker died Feb. 16, two days after being attacked by a juvenile inmate. She was pronounced brain dead and died two days later after being taken off of life support.

Dylan Cardeilhac, 15, has been charged in her death. He is accused of strangling Baker as part of an escape attempt.

Scottsbluff attorney Maren Chaloupka said the family hopes to spur the county to make improvements that will ensure the safety of corrections officers “so that Amanda Baker will not have died in vain.”

We want services, but we don't want to pay for them?

We are so desperate, we acquiesce to unsafe work conditions, public and private.

And the only recourse is after the hurt and damage -- if the legal system will even find culpability.
