DES MOINES (AP) — The state agreed to help conceal why at least 55 government workers had lost their jobs by allowing them to voluntarily resign or retire.

In some cases the state removed all evidence of past wrongdoing from personnel records. That meant a future employer might not learn, during the hiring process, about an individual’s troubled past.

State Sen. Julian Garrett, R-Indianola, said the practice is improper because it means Iowa is giving out false information about former employees.

But Matt Glasson, who teaches at the University of Iowa Labor Center, said the practice might not be that unusual. He said governments and private companies routinely make deals with employees who have been disciplined.
