Planting Peace (of Equality House fame)

[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]Planting Peace runs a few orphanages and is committed to de-worming every child possible. There's a fundraiser going on right now that needs all the help it can get.

Please visit their CrowdRise "Stomp the Worm" fundraiser page, learn the story, share it, and donate whatever amount you're comfortable with.

Every little bit helps.

kwashiorkor:

The defining sign of kwashiorkor in a malnourished child is pedal edema (swelling of the ankles and feet). Other signs include a distended abdomen, an enlarged liver with fatty infiltrates, thinning hair, loss of teeth, skin depigmentation and dermatitis...The typical swollen abdomen is due to two causes: ascites because of hypoalbuminemia (low oncotic pressure), and enlarged fatty liver.[10]

that's pretty basic knowledge, which is the first reason this feels shady to me. the other is the vagueness about the 'worms'. earthworms? tapeworms? roundworms? planaria? what are they talking about?

[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]There's contact information on the web site.

By all means, let us know what you find out.

[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]I'm reasonably sure you won't ask the people at Planting Peace, preferring to call them "shady" from the certainty of your incomplete knowledge.

Yes, the distended bellies are from kwashiorkar. And one of the primary contributing factors of malnutrition kwashiorkor is intestinal parasites/worms (of whatever variety), which suck away what little nutrition the victim manages to get in the first place.

Read: http://www.kwashiorkor.net/Kwashiorkar-Causes.html And maybe whisper an apology for smearing people who are trying to do some real good in this world.

don't have such useful effect when you give them to starving people. sounds like a gates-style (pharma over food) initiative to me.

from your link:

The principal cause for kwashiorkor is a diet that is severely deficient in protein.

[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]They do both and more, but you don't really care about that.

our goal is to eliminate capitalism as an economic system so we can systemically fix the problems. I give to many charitable groups (as I'm sure we all do) but that is just a band-aid approach that props up this sad system. We need to eliminate it by whatever means possible.
