my mother died at 54 and smoking had a lot to do with that, alcohol contributed as well...

long story short, i cannot seem to quit, it is not for lack of trying. but thank you for your concern, and i mean that.

it hasn't taken over for the cigs yet. but we'll see. i'm 62 now and so far healthy in spite. did hypnotherapy this year, did no good. my doctor spends at least 5-10 minutes working on me at every appointment. maybe before it's all over i'll beat this addiction. i'm not willing to hate myself for it anymore though.

we'll see. i am sorry for your loss.

22. Well thank you, I'm sorry for your loss as well.

Just keep doing both. One day you'll say to yourself, "This cigarette tastes like shit".

I tried one the other day to be social and put it out after a couple puffs. Then I smelled like smoke and so had to wash my hands. Yuk!

...and boy, do you save money when you stop buying those death sticks..

47. I used them very successfully and stayed clean for 7 years. Then I started hanging around with

some people who smoked, so I took it up again. In an effort to quit again, I started using the patches again. On the day I decided to kick the habit again, I smoked a couple of cigarettes and then put on 1/2 patch and went to work. About an hour later, I got nauseous, started sweating and shaking. It took quite a while and a lot of water to feel normal again. I don't think I ever wanted another cigarette after that. Every now and then, though, I must admit that I feel that old craving for a smoke, but it goes away.

Best of luck in your mission to kick the habit.

56. I was very lucky in that my company subsidized the cost of patches

to the point they cost no more than a carton of smokes so it was like not really spending much more at all.

Because I smoked AND used the patch but it was VERY easy to cut way down on cigarettes while I had the patch on. I just noticed I didn't need a cig all the time and within a couple weeks of using th epatch I was down to 2 cigarettes a day - morning coffee and after dinner.

Then one day I forgot to have my morning cig. I didn't even notice until almost dinner. I went like that for a few more weeks and then I didn't need the after dinner smoke and I was able to go down to the mid-sized patch. I went smokeless with the patch for a few more weeks and then one day I realized I had for gotten to put on my patch. I counted that as the day I quit smoking. April 20th, 2003.

Before I started using the patch I was a 3 pack a day smoker. Marlboro Red box. Occasionally a pack of Camels to change up the flavor. I thought I would die of starvation before cancer because they were getting so fn expensive - I think I was paying 30~35 dollars a carton then. I get scared when I see cig prices at the gas stations now. I ain't that rich lol.

I do still have cravings - especially at concerts in smoky bars when I'm drinking. I satisfy those urges by having 3 or 5 nice cigars a year. 1 cigar keeps me level for weeks or months. And my doctor said it beats cigs every day.

Best of luck to you - I know it's very hard. I do not miss being a slave to finding a place to smoke at inopportune times - wondering when my next chance to smoke will be and having everyone wait on me while I do it.

I think acupuncture is bs like homeopathy but perhaps the combo, psychologically, had an effect.

Or maybe it was the money.

I have to add that a relative of mine owned a gas station overseas many years ago. A customer took off with the nozzle still in the gas tank and a huge fireball ensued. My BIL was burned over much of his body.

Able to choke a person big time and a bitch to get out of clothing and the interior of a car. The worker took it to a unnecessary level, The worker could of harmed the smoker seriously with that chemical. Had that chemical got in that mans mouth or eyes it would of been a big lawsuit, The worker could of turned the pump off, He could of walked up and asked the guy to put it out.

would have been better to let him keep on smoking and have a fireball erupt and the guy and other customer get severely burned. Then there would have stil been a lawsuit. He most likely had been told to put out the cigarette and refused.

FIRST best thing: Earlier, driving thru Harvard Square I saw Malia Obama crossing Mass Ave and tooted the horn and waved hello. First she looked at me like, who's this old guy waving...then she gave that wonderful Obama smile!

What a pleasant surprise to see her, just out and about.

30. Idiot wants to take others with him

I'd shut off the turbine in a heartbeat, another idiot thing I see in gas stations is people sticking the nozzle in the tank, then they get back in the car.....

The most dangerous substance most of these brain donors ever come into contact with and they act like it's no different than water.

Future Darwin Award recipients.

You see in large throughput gas stations sometimes the relief valves are set too high, this is a problem when you get someone who's doing the old " topping off the tank" trigger dance, that can actually make another nozzle pop out of a tank and spray fuel all over if it's not being monitored.

All sorts of bad things can ensue, just because someone's too lazy to stand next to the car while fling their tank.

And yes I have seen it happen, I built gas stations from the ground up for five years.

Want to hear something scary?

We would be switching out old dispensers for new ones, we'd put the new ones on their pallets off to the side in the station, nowhere near where they are supposed to be when installed.

And every time we'd get at least 5-6 people a day, usually older folks, who would drive up to them and put the nozzle in their tank, soon they would walk up to us or the attendant and ask why the pump didn't work?, well, it's because they aren't attached to a fuel tank, or even anywhere within fifty feet of the station itself.

Think about that for a minute.....

41. Nobody watches Mythbusters ??

A lit cigarette is highly unlikely to ignite either gasoline or gasoline vapors. Only when being drawn hard enough to increase the temp very high, and only with a high enough concentration of vapor. There are videos and articles all over about this... you can chuck a lit cig in a puddle of gas, it will just go out. Hollywood lied.
