Just saw JAWS on the big screen

At Richmond's Byrd Theater. First opened Dec 24th 1928. Undergoing restoration of the seats currently. This was a surprise for our daughter who has seen it before but obviously not in a theater. That kid is having quite a summer - yurt camping Sunday to Tuesday, "Despicable Me 3" yesterday, JAWS tonight. Camping trip at the beach next week at a summer camp.

There was a brief introduction by the owner/general manager. Really he was stalling.
Show of hands - several people there (total attendance was about 200?) had never seen it, ever.

Several parts still evoked screams and gasps. Ben Gardner appearing for instance - massive screams. The Mom and son in front of me (the only teenage boy who sits up straight in a chair) literally lifted up a couple of inches out of their seat.

Quint's death was much more gruesome than it appears on TV even big flat screens.
Dreyfuss had a big blemish beside his nose. Heavily covered with make up.
The shark worked more than the commonly held belief.
The nails on the chalkboard really twisted up people in the audience. Much more than on TV.
The almost back to back shooting stars looked spectacular.

I jumped a couple of times too and I have no idea how many times I've seen it.

I still remember jumping out of my seat, when the shark popped up during the 'chumming' scene.

They are refurbishing the Capitol Theater in downtown Flint, and I am HOPING they will be showing films, again. It was built in 1928. I remember seeing so many amazing films, there, when I was young. I can still remember the twinkle 'star' lights, in the ceiling.

Maybe not as big but it was a great place to take a date. Tickets used to be $2 now they are $4 for a regular second run movie. Last night was $5. We even contributed to the restoration fund n the cash drop box in the lobby.

I got through 90 minutes before I had to start squirming around in my seat. They are slowly replacing the seats.

except that the Redford is Japanese themed instead of Roman themed. Cool!

. . .was when Hooper is diving and looking into the hole in the boat when the dead guy pops through the hole. Popcorn flying all over the theater.

I'm soooo jealous of the peeps seeing it for the first time!! OMG!!

Oh, Quint's death slayed me...he didn't die in the book, right - I was devastated when he got et (plus, RIP Mr. Shaw, too soon)

Bruce worked FINE. Oh, not during production, apparently! - but onscreen, to this day?? Bruce - uh - KILLS!

Yep - Mr. Shaw's nails on the chalkboard = perfection.

The guys on the dock in the evening?? Back up, underpants!! Back up while you can!

Etc etc!! it's quite a perfect movie. - *sigh* I miss Roy Scheider and Robert Shaw terribly to this day.

Thanks for trip down memory lane, u!

The Indianapolis.

And monologues in movies generally suck and need to be ended with comic relief.

Shaw killed that though.

and have probably watched it or had it on just for sound 50 times? I saw it on the big screen when it first came out. As an avid scuba diver then it really creeped me out. That moment when you jump in and wait for the bubbles to clear was always unnerving. I have seen many sharks on many dives but I know if I saw anything like that I would never go back again. Wow, I am jealous. I love that movie. Funny about Dreyfuss. Thanks for sharing. Your daughter is a lucky girl to have parents like you.

I didn't mention - "Chrissie" (Susan Backlinie) had almost the perfect female body back then. On full display on the big screen.

I saw that as a kid in the theater and it was scary then. I do enjoy watching it when it is on the tv, always seem to catch something new in it.

When Brody is looking through a book about sharks there is an image of a shark with a scuba tank in its mouth and then and pic of a man stand in a crows nest overlooking a beach.

Jaws was and is a classic. "Show me the way to go home...I'm tired and I wanna go to bed...I had a little drink about an hour ago...and it went right to my head...baum, baum, baum..."

Thanks.

I've never read the book. I do most of me reading online but I do tend to read one book during our beach week. I have to pick up "The Second Amendment: A Biography" tomorrow at B&N. that was going to be my summer book. Maybe I should read JAWS - my 11 year old wants to read it.

Local theater plays classics on one screen one day a week.

Amazing how much it still works.

Way more than that stupid "found footage" crap.
