We have two new big kitty boys adopted from a nearby county animal shelter! PHOTO Update

It's been 5 years since our last kitty--Simba--crossed the Rainbow Bridge. He lived to be 17 (2012) and his brother, Mouse, was 14 (2009).

Although I am slightly allergic to kitties, my husband and I have had kitties during most of our marriage. After Simba died, I really
didn't want to get another kitty because I wanted to travel and while it's easy to take our rescue dog, Snowy, to the pet resort (which she
loves) when we're on a trip where she can't come with us, it's not so easy for kitties to be left alone in the house and only visited by
a pet sitter when we're gone.

My husband clearly misses kitties. And I am pretty much done with traveling. So, I relented and started looking for adult kitties. I'm 66 and he's 74. I really didn't want to make a 20 year commitment to a kitten.

Today I brought home two 9 year old brothers--who'd been relinquished to the animal shelter--and they are now camped out (hiding under
the bed) in the master bedroom.

These are their county animal shelter photos. I will post new ones when they come out from under the bed!

Elmo

Stitch

UPDATE: Stitch has decided ON the bed is better than UNDER the bed, and Elmo seems to agree the view is better exploring the room.

Elmo has made it outside the bedroom a couple of times, coming as far as the living room. I've been sitting on the floor with Snowy (leashed) lying down in the living room waiting for Elmo to realize he can explore the entire living room and Snowy won't be able to follow him.

11. Oh, how wonderful, mn!! I'm sorry you have slight kitty allergies, but it sure sounds as if dear

husband has severe cat-love issues!! How gracious of you to relent and give him what he craves!

It's soooo great when siblings can stay together - they'll comfort each other as they cower under the bed till it's time to come sniffing around their new digs...sure hope they get along with Snowy, eh? - - It just takes a little time, and then they get their relationships worked out, and then it's all good!

I am also 66 (cheese, when did THAT happen??!), and, as delightful as the rowdy youngsters are, I'd be too scared to have them underfoot - they might zip in front of me and try to throw me onto the floor, or I might accidentally squish a little one who is hiding like, under a couch cushion - eek!

I'm so happy for ya'll and yes, please, do keep us posted as Elmo and Stitch sloooowly ease into their dear and welcoming new home!

(yes, I'm a cat-freak!)

Hugs to the new family members. You've done a good thing. for them AND for yourselves.

Are those their shelter names, too, or the names from their previous family?

One of our females came from a shelter, and her shelter name was Penny - my husband's ex-wife's name. No way! That got changed before we left the building.

and they clearly respond to Elmo and Stitch. So we'll keep the names.

We kept Snowy's name, too, when she came to live with us as a rescue.

No previous spouses named Elmo or Stitch on either side!

...made several trips to look around, and in one neighborhood that was still building, the only remaining lots were on a street named Penny Lane. I spent about 30 seconds trying to convince myself that I could think of the Beatles' song and not the ex's name, but I lost that battle. Some things you should just not have to do -

Them rescuing you, that is.

From the empty meaninglessness of a catless life.

They're plotting under the bed, there, to give you the maximum "cat experience" in gratitude for your intelligent perception of how much you need THEM to rescue you.

Congratulations.

I was having kind of a crappy day but to see those two beautiful faces and know that you are keeping them together, well it makes the other stuff seem small.

I have cat allergies too despite sharing my home with two of the furry little demons. You really do build up a tolerance after awhile.

37. Elmo has already proven himself to be an escape artist.

I hadn't gone driven two blocks and all of a sudden he was out of his zippered carrier!

So, I had to stop the car and wrestle him back in (not doing a 45 minute drive on the freeway with a loose cat in the car!). No way
to wash my hands (which is the trick I've learned to minimize cat allergy).

So far, so good!

38. While I was waiting for them in the lobby, a couple a single woman came out.

Apparently they had been looking at the same kitten (6 weeks) at the same time. When the single woman
found out the couple was going to adopt the kitten, she left! I couldn't believe she didn't go back
and find another kitty.

And I was so saddened while I was waiting in line for my turn to do the paperwork because a couple was relinquishing a beautiful
young pit bull. They had adopted him from the SPCA several months previously and the reason they gave for turning him in?
He wouldn't "play" with their other dogs. WTF?!? Broke my heart to see him sitting so calmly next to these people who were
going to dump him on the shelter.

30. Beautiful boys!

Elmo looks like he has "van cat" (look it up) markings - all white with red tabby ears/upper face and tail, maybe a red patch or 2 in the body. Turkish Van is a separate breed with a very dense coat but any cat can have van markings.
When you're used to having a cat or 2 in the family it's just "wrong" not to have one (or more). 8 years ago when my daughter and her now-husband got their own place the first thing they did was adopt Edward from a rescue. Now my son has his own place and is getting a kitty soon.

We just adopted a nice boy a little over a year old. Got dumped at the pound because his family moved.😿 I had to run into pet store for litter because we were going out of town for work for a few days. He was staring at me from his cage (adoption event). The nice volunteers offered to take him home for 6 days until we got back. Turns out one of them lives around the corner from us. So we not only got a new kitty, we got a new friend, too.

41. How wonderful.

Some years back I did volunteer work at an animal shelter, and the saddest stories were the ones where an old person had died or gone into a nursing home and there was no one close to them able or willing to take in their pets. I worked mostly with the cats, so it was the cats I knew about. One time there were two cats, at least as old as the two you've adopted, and it just broke my heart. I was not in a place to take them in, unfortunately.

Someday when I am ready to give a home to cats again, I will adopt the oldest cats at the shelter, preferably a pair like yours. They are so deserving of a new home.

And they really are gorgeous.

I've promised my son that I won't adopt any more kittens that he might inherit. But shelters and rescues are overflowing with kittens (worst season ever, some people are saying), and adopters are going "KITTENZZZZZZ!" and beautiful guys like these are crying in the back of their cages. 68. Very true!

Most of my cats came to me as older cats--except the children of pregnant mothers who managed to stay. It's a good thing kittens are cute, because they're just little hyperactive destruction machines. And older cats are better with children...no end to their goodness. And they're so grateful to be back in a home again, after they've lost one.

57. Beautiful fur babies!

So glad you decided to take these two boys into your life. I lost my best friend, Arlo, 17 months ago to cancer. I found Arlo and his brother, Woody, in a cardboard box on the side of the road when they were about 6 weeks old. Woody died when he was only 5 from heart failure. Arlo lived on, but never got over losing his brother, my heart broke for him in the weeks he waited to see him again. I have not recovered yet from losing Arlo ~ he took my heart and soul with him when his light went out and we lowered his little body into his resting spot next to his brother in our garden where we played together for so many years. I'm 72 now, so I don't dare take on another that would probably end up in a shelter when I pass on. I do have six other rescues we got when Arlo's brother died ~ trying to soothe Arlo's broken heart ~ but it just wasn't the same for Arlo. I do love my others and hope I will outlive them all. Thank you for adopting.

In my area, the animal shelter has a "seniors for seniors" program. It's all about older people adopting older cats. The fees are lower and the examinations, neuterings and shots are free.

9-year-old cats surrendered to animal shelters often aren't so lucky. unless it's a "no-kill" animal shelter.

61. I went running down to this shelter--it is a kill shelter--because Elmo & Stitch had

already been there for 3 weeks.

This shelter does have a lot of foster cat parents and I did see two kitties go out to foster while I was waiting for the boys
to be tested (feline leukemia) and given their chips. Still, there are lots of pups/kitties who don't get adopted.

And, of course, it is kitten season and if you look at their gallery page of adoptions, lots of kittens are going out for adoption.

Someone else said Elmo looked like he'd dipped his face in a creamsicle!

60. Good for you!

And your own ages aside, unless you have young children at home, it's always nice to consider adopting healthy, mature animals.

62. May you all be granted Many Years! in health and happiness.

God Bless.
An honorable and selfless act receiving these handsome lovey-dovers into your fold. 🐱

Our last kittie daughter passed over last May--18 yrs.old. We adopted a rescue doggie daughter last August. 🐶
She cost 150.00 adoption fee and thousands of $$ in accessories and accoutrements. She's worth every penny!
(I'd give my life for her.)

Much love to y'all. 💞

63. This county shelter has an amazing deal to entice seniors to adopt older kitties

Normal kitty adoption price is $45 at this shelter, but if a senior > 60 adopts a kitty > 3 years old, the price is $10!

So, I took advantage and paid $20 for Elmo and Stitch.

I still need to buy a scratching post/kitty tree and a bed large enough for them to sleep together if they don't want to sleep ON the bed in the master bedroom.

65. I have a best girlfriend always taking in ferals and they had multilevel kittie condos for the crew.

We'd go over to visit and they'd all be iiihh-ahhh, yawning and stretching when we acknowledged them! Hahah.
All our kids slept with us. Our new dogga dog sleeps with mommie. I got a crick in mah neck and I don't care! Hahah, again. 😊

64. What cuties. I'm older and that's my plan, too. When the current kitties (17 and 7)

are no longer here I'll take in an older cat. I can't imagine life without a cat. Good luck with them!
