Fri Feb 24, 2017, 11:59 PM

My cat Tink and I are spending our last weekend together.

I read these to her while she was hanging out in my lap this weekend. We both appreciated the overwhelming love we received here.

She went peacefully this morning.

******************

I'm sorry to share sad news. I know we all are dealing with so much right now. I feel selfish even mentioning this now.

Tink's around 21-22 years old (yes, she's extremely old for a cat), and she's been with me for more than 20 years now. When I found her she'd been badly mangled in a dog attack and the vet said I should seriously consider euthanasia. Her huge golden-green eyes had already told me that wasn't an option, and I told him no way are we putting her down. It wasn't her time yet. It almost broke me financially back then, but I never regreted my decision. She went on to become my dearest companion, neck masseuse, therapist and general confidant. She's a Main Coon, big beautiful and one tough cookie. Most important, she's a dearly beloved part of my family.

She'd been losing some weight over the past year and the vet changed her food to a prescription. No big deal, she's an older cat and such is normal. Then I noticed blood in her urine on November 12th of 2016. A week and two vet trips later and I find out it was kidney cancer. There's no cure according to my vet, and we've been on supportive care ever since. Which reaching an end now. She went in today for an evaluation, it wasn't good. Even I see the fading with my jaundiced eyes. She had a treatment of medications today and I was told to consider euthanasia in the next week. Much as it breaks my heart, I don't want her to suffer so I scheduled to bring her in early Monday. I wanted one last weekend with my little buddy.

I purchased her a fresh tuna steak today, her favorite, and seared it for her tonight. The leftovers are hers for the next two days. Not that she has much of an appetite compared to her old self, but she still seems to appreciate fresh tuna.

I know she's had a very long life, but my heart is still breaking knowing our time is almost over. Please, just keep her in your thoughts if you have room, and wish her a gentle passing

2. So very very sad for you

All the treats for her are well deserved after giving you so much love and joy over the years. And you gave the same to her.

I wish I didn't know how hard this is for you, but I do, and share your grief, even though from afar.

6. I am so sorry to hear about Tink...

I had tears in m eyes while reading your post.

I have a 4# Chihuahua that I have had since 2002. I have noticed in recent days she is slowing down and not able to jump up on the bed any more.....she sleeps with me at night so I have to lift her up onto the bed. It breaks my heart to know that some day I will have to face what you are going through now. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you.

21. Cats don't say much but they sure get the point across

HRH was a hissing, spitting ball of fury when she was taken out of the cage to meet me. They dumped this angry little cuss into my lap and she went boneless and started to purr and solicit pets. I lived with her for over 20 years and took her for her last vet visit 2 years ago. She was also a Maine Coon, full of long haired tortietude.

I think sometimes it's harder to say goodbye to a four footed friend than a two footed one.

That was her when I found her. Still I picked her scary butt up and stuffed her shivering body in my jacket. Luckily for me she melted and showed her tender side, after shredding my hands. Granted, she was missing most of her fur due to malnutrition and her face was basically a weeping infection when I first met her. But still, her passion was amazing. Her first instinct was to destroy me. Until she knew I came in peace and had food in my pack. Then she softened on me. And, the rest is history.

My first cat was Tinkerbelle. The next one was too, and then my daughter named her kitten juniorbelle.

I think her passing will be peaceful, I hope you are okay. 20-22 years old is ancient for a cat, I never had one live that long. It appears that you gave her a wonderful life.

27. My sincere condolences... Tink is fortunate that you know when to let go...

After rescuing our cats and dogs... I think the most important role we play in their lives it to know when it's time to let them go.

This following is a poem about a dog, but I think any pet guardian can relate...

A dog on his master...

As young as I look,
I am growing older faster than he,
seven to one
is the ratio they tend to say.

Whatever the number,
I will pass him one day
and take the lead
the way I do on our walks in the woods.

And if this ever happens
to cross his mind,
it would be the sweetest
shadow I have ever cast on snow or grass.

103. Billy Collins--our nation's Poet Laureate from 2001-2003.

I have his most recent book of poetry, and what a wonderful volume it is. Thank you for posting this one. I'm reminded of my late doggie Cammy who left me after 13 years of love, companionship and joy. When I knew her passing was inevitable, I scheduled a visit to the vet to insure her peaceful transition. I'm convinced she knew how difficult that would be for me, and the day before, she quietly lay down on our front lawn, one of her favorite places, and left on her own. Been a lotta years, but I still weep when I remember our time together, our daily walkies, and her sweet presence.

Blessings to all of you pet guardians who provide loving care for those who deserve it most. The love is always mutual and unconditional.

35. There is an old expression with cats

While they are only part of our lives, we are their whole life.

We're a multi-cat household and we've got a whole set of geriatrics - most of our household are now 16+, so I can definitely understand whatever you are going thru. I'm very glad she found you when she did. Many thoughts for a peaceful, gentle and loving transition.

I've been rescuing (and eventually saying goodbye to) cats all my life, so I understand what you're going through. There's nothing harder than making that decision when the little furball trusts you so much. But know that you're honoring that trust, and not violating it, with your decision. I feel for you, but you've given Tink so much and I know she's grateful for her life with you. Virtual hugs sent!

52. I am so sorry.

Think about the good times, about how great a companion she was after you rescued her and got her healthy.

She has been with you a long time.

I remember when we had to help our Claudia cross the bridge. She was sixteen. I try to remember her when she would sit in the picture window or on the window seat. I remember her biting my arm if I was inattentive. I remember her attacking the printer and walking on the keyboard. You will have great memories, too.

55. My sincerest condolences

I've lost may a dog in my life. The love is real. The loss is real.

I'm glad Tink had you for 20 wonderful years. The pain of your loss is not something I'd wish on anyone. Tink, however, was worth every tear of it.

I am sorry for your loss.

Give your kitty lots of big hugs. Maybe you've seen this. My older sister who has over the years lost so many pets keeps this lovely prose. I hope it will help you too!

86. My first cat made it to 22

We animal lovers volunteer to have our hearts broken. Our pets will almost always die before us, but the thought of living without animal companions in our lives just isn't imaginable.

Please have some peace knowing that, not only did you save her, but you have given her a wonderful life, full of love for over 2 decades. My first cat lived to 22 and I also had to put her down. I also had a last supper with her of her favorite Popeye's chicken. But she was ready, and I was ready to help her go.

Check with your local SPCA and Humane Society. They often have pet loss support groups. I found it very comforting to be in a room, sharing stories with people experiencing the same kind of grief I was. Take care. ❤

87. I'm so sorry... but you are performing an act of love...

... just as you did when you rescued her and refused euthanasia then.

My Ninja came to me with bladder problems and finally had to have PU surgery. It had a great success rate. I maxed out my CareCredit to get it done. Otherwise he would have required euthanasia, and it seemed so wrong to euthanize a cat when a surgery to fix the problem was available and very successful.

But when his time actually came -- oral cancer, less than 1% one-year survival rate even with treatment.... I was with him to make sure he knew he was loved as he peacefully went to sleep, and knew he would be there watching for me on the Rainbow Bridge.

Don't ever doubt that you are doing the right thing as a response pet owner -- you're stopping her pain.

Much love to you, and to Tink....

116. You're a great caretaker

I did this with my cat who had FIP, six years ago. When he stopped eating, we had a nice day sitting together and I told him over and over how much I loved him. At the vet's, he lay purring on the table on a soft blanket with my arm next to him. The vet gave him the injection and his purring suddenly stopped. He didn't move; it was instantaneous and peaceful.

I used to work with a woman who had an old, sickly dog. Every day this woman used to say she wished she'd find that the dog had fallen down the stairs and died. She didn't have your courage and love, to make sure that your loved one passed peacefully in the arms of a friend.

I'm sending you both good thoughts, and spoiling my cat tonight.

118. I know this pain goes deep.

Your very sad story comes almost a full year after I had to have our beloved cat put to sleep. He was a very genuine rescue, having been found by a co-worker of my wife while driving to work, huddling under a shrub on an island in the Interstate in freezing rain. He was tiny - everyone guessed a 4-month old kitten - no fur, only peachfuz, not an smidge of body fat, you could see every bone and muscle, you could see his little heart beating. The coworker put him in a cardboard box and took him to her job. My wife phoned me about adopting him and of course I said yes. Every one of her coworkers looked inside the cardbox and several of them told my wife to prepare for the worst - that he wouldn't last the night. And they were off by only fourteen years. It turned out he must have wandered away from his home a year earlier because, despite his very small size, the x-ray of his bones showed he was about 18 months old, and once he started eating meals regularly he got taller, longer, and finally wider, and his fur grew in like fleece. But, by the time he was about 16, the injuries and ailments of his infancy caught up with him and he was in terrible pain.

Every pet lover knows your misery. It never really goes away. But there's another cat that desperately needs a home.

I had to do this with one of my little babies. SO HARD knowing ahead of time it's your last days and minutes with them. You're doing the right thing and you're doing it out of love - she'll go with that and no baby kitteh could ask for more. Unfortunately they can't live as long as we do!

Spoil her rotten until Monday and I know you'll be there looking into her eyes as she dozes off peacefully. The last thing she'll see is the face of Love.

133. Thank you, and yes it sucks.

I'm just focusing on the fact she went gently. It was the right thing to do, but what's right is all too often not easy.

134. RIP, Tink.

You'll miss her a lot and she'll leave a cat-shaped hole in your life and your heart. In time you might want to fill that hole with a shelter cat who needs a home - not a replacement, because she can't be replaced; but because giving another cat a good home would be a nice way of remembering her. I bet she'd like that.

136. Someday I'll start this journey again.

I said I'd never do this again this morning when we were heading to the vet, but I've had hours of wandering around looking at all her things and remembering her since then. Eventually, someday, I think I'll honor her by saving another cat. An adult again, like she was when she came into my life. They're too often overlooked, and Tink's proof they shouldn't be.

128. Just saw this... deepest sympathies on your loss.

It's very hard to do what you had to do. I hope there is some comfort in knowing you gave her a good life to the very end.

130. I know your pain.

A feral cat abandoned 2 kittens at my back door 17 years ago. The male died but the female lived on to become a wonderful pet which is unusual for a feral cat. I named her Rugrat because she was born in a rug out in a field and she looked like a rat when I found her. She developed pneumonia at age 15 and went downhill fast. She refused to eat or drink and got down to 5 lbs. The vet said he couldn't do anything for her and suggested she be put down. That was hard. The morning came and she purred as I petted her for the last time. I felt awful. I buried her in the back yard and still plant Impatiens on it in the summer. It took me 21 months before I even wanted a cat again. But I adopted not one but TWO tabby cats from the local shelter and they are a joy. Trust me - it works so you can look forward to a cat to replace Tink in due time.
