A polar bear and a Canadian eskimo dog appear to have become unlikely friends, after a tour guide filmed the pair interacting happily.
Updated yesterday at 6:23pm
David De Meulles told CBC News he took out two tourists who were hoping to see a polar bear close-up when they came across the strange sight in Churchill, Manitoba.
"I had no idea what was going to happen, and then sure enough he started petting that dog, acted like he was a friend," he said.
"I just so happened to catch the video of a lifetime."
He said it was a "beautiful sight to see".

(51,544 posts)The chained dog stood no chance. And the polar bear was given a death sentence. Now it associates dogs and humans with food, so it will enter other properties and get shot. Which is why feeding polar bears is against the law.

(499 posts)From the article:
"Conservation officers had to immobilize a bear in that area last week and move it to the holding facility because it killed one of his dogs," the spokesperson told CBC News.
"A mother and cub were also removed because there were allegations the bears were being fed and the females' behaviour was becoming a concern."
Stirling said it's possible bears that learn to associate dogs and humans with food could get in trouble down the line. If they encounter other remote northern communities while out on the Arctic sea ice, Stirling said polar bears might try to enter them and get killed by locals out of safety concerns.
"It's basically a death sentence for the bears," he said.

(36,833 posts)It is not adorable in the least bit. The poor dogs can't even flee due to being chained. Both the dogs and the polar bears are in danger due to this arse.

(36,833 posts)"That was the only day we didn't feed the f--king bears, the only night we didn't put anything out," Churchill resident Brian Ladoon told Bryce Hoye at CBC News.
Ladoon, who runs the Mile 5 Dog Sanctuary in Churchill, regularly feeds the polar bears in the area to try and dissuade them from picking off his dogs for their meal.
"The dog was chained up and they're totally vulnerable," Stirling told CBC News.
And not being able to tell the difference between the two could be seriously dangerous, not just for dogs, but for people living in the vicinity of these apex predators, whose numbers are now dwindling before our eyes.
