Wanting advice!!

So I'll simplify the dilemma.

Find a cheap home to buy nearby that we'll put money into to make comfortable.

OR

Build our own home on family land, further away from my job but it will be made to our design. We won't be close to many conveniences either.

Wish I could make a poll!

rural, private? I would and did,had to drive 60+ miles to work, but the peace and quiet was worth it to me.Your mileage may vary.

Plus you can build it like you want,I didn't need a 14x20 bathroom with a whirlpool.

Mostly I mean what's the basic infrastructure like? Are the utilities (electric grid, Internet, public water, etc.) available and reliable? County/city services reliable? Emergency medical helicopter flights availabl (and affordable!) if there's not a full service emergency hospital near? Fire department up to par? Road services maintained? Depending on if you have children, what are the schools like, and how would the little ones get to school? Is the school system a priority with the locals? What's the county/city government like?

Lastly, will you be able to recoup the money you invest in a timely fashion if for some reason you need relocate quickly?

Believe me, these things can matter a lot down the road to you and your family.

Signed,
A person who has lived both urban and rural.

P.S. Both types of living have their advantages and disadvantages. It's up to you to weigh them and decide what's right for you and yours. Best wishes to you either way!

where it is considered rural. Our home before this was real rural.

There are plus and minuses to rural.

pluses...deer in the yard
quiet
parties without worrying about the neighbors complaining
very few door knockers for Christ.
no homeowners association

the minuses
driving everywhere.
no pizza delivery

building your house to your specs is harder than you think. I designed, found the builder found our lot and made most of the decisions. Knowing that most of the responsibility would fall on me, I really studied up on the building process. It helped to keep the costs down. We actually came in under budget. The biggest thing was, I made all the design choices before building. That way if I chose upgraded anything, the cost was already included. No money surprises at closing. Always remember it is cheaper to change things on blueprints, than in the middle of building the structure.

When you build you only have x amount of dollars, so you do have to make choices. There are things that I wish I could change. If we build our next home, I will put on solar panels and hot water on demand.
