Right now I'm using Netflix, and I'm a tad disappointed in their offerings. I'm considering the $11.99 a month version of Hulu. Any thoughts ? Thanks in advance!

(10,951 posts)if so, try the one month free trial of Acorn TV. If you like it, they only charge $4.99/month.

(10,418 posts)Netflix is good for older shows and movies. Hulu is good for current stuff. And if you're going to have Hulu, the ad free version is well worth the extra 4 bucks

It is all about the contracts with the various production companies.
FX has set up an exclusive with Hulu for The Strain, Fargo, and probably other of their current shows. Season 2 of The Strain just came out on Hulu for example. Fargo isn't out yet. On the other hand, Justified has been on Amazon Prime exclusively since the first season came out there.
I consider having Amazon Prime streaming as a free service because of the free shipping and discounts on merchandise - the video is a bonus.
If you pay attention and monitor Hulu you can catch current shows as they release
and use Hulu like you would use 'on demand'
I agree with the poster who stated they are all fairly inexpensive so give them a trial and decide.

(53,016 posts)Hulu has some current shows, but usually only a few episodes. Netflix doesn't have anything new, whereas Hulu does. However you should be aware that a lot of their catalog isn't viewable over TV. It must have to do with the licenses they negotiate with the networks. If you're going to get Hulu, it's definitely worth getting the commercial free subscription.

Even together they're far less than cable, so I keep them both.

(23,593 posts)I get netflix ($7.99 per month) mostly for their original productions...House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, Grace and Frankie, and others. They're also good for catching up on TV series you might have missed. But their movie selection is the pits.
I also have Amazon Prime ($99 per year $8.25 per month includes free shipping on stuff you order from them).
I compared some movies I would like to watch on both:
Room
The Big Short
Spotlight
Dead Pool
The Finest Hour
Sisters
Blue Jasmine
Captain Philips
The Grand Budapest Hotel
They were all available on Amazon Prime for a rental fee of $3.99.
Only The Big Short and Spotlight were available on Netflix.

(37,457 posts)For example, they have Citizen Kane and Casablanca. You can rent the movies for as low as $2.99 or buy them (and hope Google's servers never die etc) for various prices.

(22,235 posts)Look for the blue stripe on the package (upper left corner). When I go in to search or select, I choose the Search Prime box That weeds out the stuff I have to rent or buy.

(10,621 posts)And if you haven't watched any of the classic HBO series like The Wire, Deadwood, or The Sopranos - there's that too.
You don't need a cable subscription and the cost is reasonable.
