In the last year of her life she was able to swim in the ocean or the first time, climb a mountain for the first time, play with her puppy-cousins for the first time, and - most amazing of all - leap up & catch a bird flying in mid-air. That last one impressed everyone.
Zelda was a good dog.

I'm not there with Jake yet, but it's been on my mind for the last year. He's 11 now, slowing down a lot, his chin has gone gray. 2 or 3 times in the summer heat he suddenly seemed very confused for a few minutes, to where I feared he had dementia. Then he snapped out of it.
So it's been on my mind a lot and I'm making a mental list. One reason I'm glad I'm not working....I can take him to the lake a lot this summer. And I'm thinking that I'm going to start doing things separately with him and with Luna. Luna needs a lot more exercise, but Jake can't keep up any more. Jake is my social butterfly, but Luna is too stressed with other dogs. So I'll do special things with each of them once the weather turns. Long, solo hikes for Luna. Free summer concerts on lawns and beach swimming for Jake.
And I want to sneak Jake into Merrysprings Park at some point. He went there as a puppy, and now all I have to do is drive by the street it's on and he gets very excited. But dogs aren't allowed there any more. I'm thinking if I go off season in the evening, when nobody is around, he'll be able to walk around. Last time I took him there, we sat alone on the hilltop and just watched the sun go down. He looked like he was remembering and re-living his fun days there.
