DUers, I need to vent and let shit out. Please lend a sympathetic ear

My wife has spent the last two weeks in tears. I am in Malaysia working right now and can't help back. She knows and accepts this. I am stuck here.

I can in a little while.

My father in law is in a Chinese jail for embezzlement and fraud. He has screwed his daughter and his wife.

In the process, the plans of buying a house (which is still a go) and bringing her parents to live with us in No. VA is now up in the air (because I do not know how the Dept. of State deals with convicted felons and visas). My mother in law will not have a problem. My father in law may.

He confessed to doing it. And China has a 99.6% conviction rate. He's looking at 3-5 years.

Yes, I will be able to support the family with my screenwriting and movie producing, but I need a shoulder right now.

I am beside myself and I don't know what to do.

You have 3-5 years to address FIL situation.

What MIL is going to do, will determine housing.

I offered to do it and my wife accepted. I just need a little time to set the things up.

She will live with us (what joy) and when we buy our house in the STates, MIL will bounce between our house in China and our house in Manasses.

She's leaning on me because I'm a 38 year old American man who doesn't care if his father lives or dies due to years of physical, emotional and psychological abuse.

I'm working to keep her head on right, but she's having a hard time.

We have a place in China. In time, the VA house will be bought. And I have family nearby in Gainesville.

Your MIL can enter the US for a long term stay, it seems.

Your FIL may not be able to, but he's going to be in jail for 3-5 years in China, so a US visa hardly matters at this time.

Is the problem his wife wants to stay in China to visit him periodically?

I think you have no problem except helping your wife and MIL emotionally. You have 3-5 years to talk to an immigration attorney and see if they let in a person convicted of a felony.

As to visits by your wife and MIL to him, be sure to check out how leaving the US temporarily affects visas. I believe there are some restrictions on that that may invalidate the visas.

Your FIL has trashed his family, but there seems to be no way you can fix that for 3-5 years. Unless you can buy his way out of the conviction. But be careful there as well, that may be considered illegal in the US.

FIL is going to prison for embezzlement and fraud.

In Laws are Chinese. I'm American. He's going to a chinese prison, not an American one.

My wife is getting her green card soon, so that isn't a problem. MIL will be on a B2. Ten year visa, with six months validity each time.

I am keeping my wife sane, because she is almost a basketcase right now. Her life got turned upside the week before Chinese New Year.
