We know about the soda - pop divide, but is there a donut divide out there, too?

I think some areas prefer cake donuts while others prefer fried donuts. I think Buffalo is for fried donuts and the rest of NYS goes for cake donuts.

but my favorite are Krispy Kreme when the store has its' light on that indicates a new batch just came out of the fryer.

Sadly, all the ones close to me have closed so I don't get to go very often.

It bugs me that crappy Dunkin Donuts are popping up all over and they don't even cook them at the store. They get a truckload from somewhere every morning and you get that stale shit all day. Dunkin Donuts is the Britney Spears of donuts. Kinda pretty but no substance.

krispy kreme locations exploded across the area when they exploded across the rest of the country. And just as quickly imploded in Texas.

I know people that loved them, but they were just too sweet! That's why I prefer Shipley's (and sometimes a local "gourmet" donut shop, River Oaks Donuts.)

Our high school sold a package of two Krispy Kremes. I enjoyed eating them with hot soup at lunchtime. It never occurred to me that it was an odd food combination.

and donuts are becoming a sideline for sandwiches, croissants, flavored coffee etc. It's hard to get any donuts after noon, too. Once the morning batch is gone, it's gone.

I have to admit, Dunking Donuts is good for my health. All I have to do when tempted is to recall the disappointment at not being able to get a fried donut.

Remember this...

But now that the French owners who bought them in the 90's sold them to Bain Capital and some other outfits everything's on the cheap. Like 7-11, who stopped making sandwiches a few years ago and just has the plastic wrapped one made who-knows-where, they make the donuts at a central location.

Reduces payroll, capital costs, electric bills, insurance costs, etc. Also can reduce the quality of the donuts, but that's not important.

that not enough people will support quality. Real donut stores are closing while I see new DD's all over.

And it's not like DD is any cheaper than the local stores that actually care - DD saves money by making crap and passes the savings on up to the corporate assholes.

the local bakery hired her every year to ply her trade. A true paczki is not filled with jelly or anything. It is either dusted in powder sugar, cinnamon sugar or a glaze.

I'm trying my hand at them later today.

Cake donuts go into the fryer as an extruded torus of batter. Raised donuts are cut-out discs of dough.

There's also "old fashioned" which I'm not sure how they are made. I think they are more cake-like but slightly irregular in shape.

All of them are deep fried.

Yeast donuts sounds like something you need an anti-fungal ointment for...

Also I prefer the fried vs fluffy cake. But, if they're from Paula's Donuts, I don't care either way.

My dad grew up in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago. He loved donuts. He grew up calling jelly-filled donuts "bismarcks." We moved to Rochester when I was 8. There was a very good local donut and ice cream shop by the name of Buckman's. The first time we went there, he asked for bismarcks and they had no idea what he was talking about.

I don't care for Krispy Kremes at all - to me, it's like eating air. Make mine cake donuts - the heavier the better. I call them hockey puck donuts.

I must admit to liking Dunkin' Donuts chocolate donut holes.
