Carson famously quit drinking because he was a control freak and needed to be sober for it TeamPooka Feb 2016 #5
He said he didn't LIKE HIMSELF when he drank--that he was a mean drunk, and that is why he quit, MADem Feb 2016 #6
He was mean sober too. The guy fired his own brother. The public reason vs the subtext. nt TeamPooka Feb 2016 #8

I don't watch him very often but he is often seen out at bars till the wee small hours of the morning.

He was drunk on his ass when he almost lost his finger.

Hope he gets some help before he ruins his liver.

NBC decided to ignore it, publicly, anyway:

They're turning a blind eye to a real issue. If he comes to a tragic end, there will be plenty of enablers to point fingers at.

Johnny and Ed were known to wet their whistles on more than one occasion.

IIRC. http://www.cbsnews.com/news/the-private-side-of-johnny-carson/

Carson admitted there was a time when he used to drink, and he didn't handle it well. "I don't handle alcohol well at all, no. Really don't," said Carson. "Oh, Ed and I have had some wonderful times in the past."

"You know what Ed told us," said Wallace. "He told us that from time to time you were going to take on the whole Russian army, and he, and you didn't have the bazookas to do it."

"That's right. No, that's one reason I found that it's probably best for me to now really disentangle with it, because I just found out that I did not drink well," said Carson. "And when I did drink, rather that a lot of people who become fun-loving and gregarious and love everybody, I would go the opposite, and it would happen, just like that."

and full disclosure I've been working on a film biopic about the guy for a couple years now.
I worshiped the guy once now I respect him.
He could be a harsh SOB to the people who loved him and those that worked with him.
If this movie eventually gets made it will be a fascinating story.

There seems to be a lot of drinking on his show, the games he plays with guests, unlike other late night shows, so it did cross my mind. But I'm also in AA, which taught me how to get and stay sober, so I did wonder if it was just my perspective. I agree that he's extremely talented, think his best talents are his musical impersonations, love when he sings with Springsteen, so I hope he can get whatever help he needs. He has more resources than most of us, but also a lot more pressure. Recognizing there's a problem is the first step and that isn't easy...

I also watched him for a few minutes last night and I didn't notice it, although I suppose it's something you wouldn't see every night. He is so very talented and funny and kind. Can't even imagine the pressure of putting a new show together almost five nights a week.

The key that I've found is the realization that you're not alone and that's the reason AA helped me. My "home group" is a women's group where half of them have over 20 years, yet they keep showing up to share their experiences and help out those who came after them, including me. But the first step is admitting that you could use some help, which can't be easy in Jimmy Fallon's position. His show is very successful, so there have to be those who want to retain the status quo. There has to be extraordinary pressure, including his new responsibilities as a Dad to two small children. Addiction issues can affect anybody...

I was a kid, but my mother loved Dean Martin. He always had a drink in his hand and was either soused or acting soused. It was a different time and was considered funny. Remember Foster Brooks?

Brooks drew upon his own battles with alcohol for his act. However, during his period of greatest fame, Brooks rarely drank. Of giving up drinking to win a bet in 1964, Brooks said, "A fellow made me a $10 bet I couldn't quit, and I haven't had a drink since.
