1. Drag bigger speakers out and...

blast Wagnerian operas.

7. I did just that many years ago

and it worked rather well. They didn't enjoy classical music and figured out to turn it down.

8. I'd suggest something a little more annoying:

(A subwoofer is highly recommended for this one.)

26. Oh Oh Oh !!! I got you beat by a mile!

for an especially annoying section, go to about 5:45 in the video! It's amazingly teeth-grittingly annoying!

3. I fear this will not end well...

I know it feels good to escalate, but...

Did you try to talk to them?

5. Are there any disturbing the peace ordinances where you live?

Most places specify that loud music has to end at midnight on a weekend.

6. I would talk to them, and tell them it isn't a problem, within reasonable limits

Loud music STOPS at a preset time ...

It's occasionally ok to blast music for a home party, especially if you ask permission first (my college aged neighbours ask for permission armed with Starbucks gift cards ...

They do push the limit, going to 1 am instead of midnight ... But we are all aware of what's going ... It's working for us ...

9. a hat pin inserted thru the woofer cone

at the point of the voice coil will weld the woofers ,destroy the amp and restore your peacefull bliss.
This works well with guitar amps and a few pin holes on drum heads in the right place are very helpful .

10. Once many years ago the guy across the street from my girlfriend's house

would sit on his front porch with his $29.95 all in one stereo and tune the radio to some bible-thumping station and blare it out on summer evenings.
My brother, who was dating my girlfriend's roommate got fed up one night and yelled at the guy to turn it down.
His response was to turn it up louder.

OK, if you want war we complied. We went over to my house, got his Phase Linear 400 amp and pre-amp, his 6-ft Heil ESS tower speakers and my reel to reel deck.
We gave him the Doors at full volume "When I was back there in seminary school, etc."
After the echoes of "You cannot petition the Lord with prayer" died out, the guy shut off his stereo and carried it inside. Never heard any more after that.

11. I did something similar while living in Darwin (northern Australia)

Darwin's always hot and everyone has their windows open - if there's a breeze going, you want your fair share of it.

One of my neighbours put on some loud music. Another responded by putting on louder music. Neighbour 1 cranked his music up. Neighbour 2 responded in the same way. And so on.

I had a pretty good stereo system. I lifted my speakers onto chairs pointing them outside. And I played this masterpiece to my neighbours. LOUD!!

Two minutes later, I turned my music down. Strangely, both my neighbours had turned their music off.

And that's how Yoko Ono brought peace and quiet to Aralia St, Nightcliffe, Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia.

12. The Scherzo from Bruckner's Fourth, man.

Scherzo from Bruckner's Fourth.

Or Mahler's First.

Or the Dies Irae from the Berlioz Requiem. That really sounds like souls sizzling in hell.

13. I've never understood that whole scenario. Do they think people are going to come out ...

...of their houses and think "Oh sweetheart, they're playing our song through that new technology called a music player?"

The one bumper sticker I have says: "Nobody wants to hear your lousy taste in music"

14. So rude when nowadays you have iPods

and such. Listen to it as loud as you want without bothering anyone else. That seems like some sort of poking, or aggressiveness going on.

18. as an activist for peace and quiet

for over 3 decades, I will tell you that the times have changed. You can no longer talk to people about noise. They think it is their God-given right to put as much noise into the soundscape as they want.

So as much as I hate to see you escalate, it appears some posters have had some luck with it.

I have all kinds of sound-canceling technology headsets, and some without. The cheapies without noise-canceling are almost as good as the noise canceling. I wear them regularly when neighbors have their lawn workers over, blasting away with the leafblowers, etc. Lawn mowers are OK, but the rest of the stuff is pretty annoying.

One small problem with that solution is that it doesn't help with the bass. If they have the base turned up and it's shaking your house, there's really nothing you can do but invite a police officer into your house, and that sometimes does help, depending on who you get and what kind of a shift they're having.

Also, maybe you can think of some errands to run, or a place to go that you've been intending to see. Again, I hate to advocate leaving your house, but it's better than experiencing their lousy taste in music.

19. There are three steps to my response protocol

1. Wagner: Ride of the Valkyries

2. Mike Oldfield: Tubular Bells

3. Bagpipe music.

I've never actually gotten to step 3, as I detail the process to the offender between steps 1 and 2.

The playback equipment does involve a sizable quantity of liquid nitrogen in the last 3 stages of amplification, though.

21. God, mate, if you played that combination, I'd marry you.

I always joked about getting unwanted guests out of my house. I'd play

1. Tom Waits then...
2. Yoko Ono then...
3. the opera Aida

I said if anyone was still there after these three, I'd marry him, her or them!!

(bagpipe music wouldn't work on many of my friends and family - we're Scottish)

20. Wouldn't have one of these would you?

If so start with something sedate say the eruption of Krakatoa.

Or maybe something with universal appeal:

And during the dinner hour:

Have fun with it.

22. yeah, I had neighbors that started with blasting music from 9am until 11pm every day

So loud that even with all my storm windows and regular windows closed I could hear it in the shower. And their front door was ~600 feet from mine.

All fucking day; every day. No point in "talking" to asshats like that; if they haven't learned by now that other people may not share their taste in music...or may even share it, but not for 14 hours day so loud that the only escape is to leave town...they're beyond redemption.

So I put my bigger stereo out in the driveway, aimed it toward them and blasted them with Jessye Norman belting out Wagner.

And put my little portable battery stereo on a chair at the edge of my property, also aimed toward them, and blasted them with Kathleen Battle and Wynton Marsalis belting out Bach.

Simultaneously

What a freakin' racket. I left it playing from 8pm until 11pm.

They *never* blasted us with their shit again.

27. I've just called the cops and been done with it.

I've lived in two places where the neighbors seemed to think it was okay to have parties at 11:30 on Sunday night. After a few friendly knocks at their door, that stopped PDQ.
