63 year old newspaper editor dies after 'sex act' with 23 year old

I hope he went out with a smile on his face at least. Tyrion Lannister would approve of his death.

>>>
Bob Caldwell, a longtime editor at the Oregonian newspaper, died Saturday, March 10, after suffering a heart attack, but the chain of events that led to his death have raised a few eyebrows as details of his last hours have began to surface.

Caldwell was at the home of a 23-year-old woman he met at Portland Community College about a year ago. The woman called 911 after Caldwell became unresponsive after the two had engaged in a sex act, the Oregonian reports. The 63-year-old was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Unless Bob fathered one of them at age 40 or more (he was 63), I'm guessing they're all older than the 23-year-old. Yuck.

Because it was a quote, I think I would have been lenient, but maybe to be sure I would have used the asterisk. Or maybe it was hidden because it is sexist? But because it is a quote, it should be considered literature or something.

Let me quote Bill Bryson here, upon being asked "What would you like people to say about you in a hundred years?"

"The amazing thing is that he's still sexually active".

His daughters are older than this young woman. Now they are burdened with the seamy scandal as they try to cope with his death. To say nothing of his wife, who has to consider possible STD as she plans a funeral.

Bob was by all accounts a productive, exemplary man. Now he's just an old goat, dead and smeared because he couldn't control his appetites.

Nothing to toast there.

The woman told deputies she met Caldwell about a year ago at Portland Community College. Caldwell, she said, knew she didn't have much money, so he provided her cash for books and other things for school in exchange for sex acts at her apartment.

The younger woman will be traumatised and the wife will be torn by anger and mourning.

Basically there is no good thing anywhere in this.

21. he was blackmailable -- editorial editor of the state's largest paper

He had the power to control news and opinion, and he was blackmailable.

A progressive posted this in the comments section of the alternative newsweekly -- this is how a blackmailable man can affect public policy:

Bob Caldwell was responsible for maintaining to this day the indefensible Oregonian Editorial Page policy of refusing to write about Public Housing policy in Portland and Multnomah county.

Bob Caldwell and I had a meeting scheduled for half an hour several years ago on the topic of Public Housing. Caldwell was so engrossed in the subject that he extended the meeting for another 30 minutes. My purpose was to persuade the chief of the Oregonian Editorial Page to write about a topic never before editorialized on the subject of Public Housing policy and the annual spending of 200 million dollars by the Housing Authority of Portland, the Portland Housing Bureau and the Portland Development Commission.

I made my case against the discredited and abhorrent policy practiced then and now of Targeted, UNLIMITED Neighborhood Concentration of Public Housing and for Equitable Distribution of Public Housing using several maps and charts. I was astonished to discover that Bob Caldwell, the Editorial Page Editor of the Oregonian, had no idea of how public housing policy was implemented nor how $200,000,000 was annually spent in Multnomah county on 50,000 clients nor who the major players were including the executive director of HAP and any of its board members. I found it very disconcerting.

Some time after our meeting Caldwell and I had an angry and loud phone conversation over his decision not to write anything about public housing policy, to accept zip codes as geographic locators suitable for Public Housing designations instead of government recognized neighborhoods and to reject asking for accurate, complete and timely Pubic Housing Statistical Data necessary to have a fact based public conversation on Public Housing policy. Bob Caldwell strictly and stubbornly stuck to his unjustified and unexplained position to stifle editorial comment for years on Public Housing policy and we never spoke again.

Oregonian publisher Chris Anderson must now decide if he will choose a successor to Caldwell who will carry on the Oregonian's Editorial Page tarnished tradition of holding hostage Public Housing policy or start spreading some sunshine on their self-defined taboo subject of public housing policy and its players.
