The Leather Man

The Leather Man traveled in a 365 mile circuit through Connecticut and New York between 1858 and 1889. Everything he wore was made out of leather. His origins and identity are unknown. He was said to speak French fluently, but communicated mostly in grunts and broken English. He slept in caves and accepted food from townspeople wherever he went. He had money and wasn’t crazy. The Humane Society detained him briefly in 1888 but had to let him go, declaring him “sane, except for an emotional affliction”.
