OK, who here doesn't like Alanis Morrisette?

Last edited Fri Sep 26, 2014, 10:16 AM - Edit history (1)

The first time I ever heard a snippet of one of her songs years ago, I didn't like her voice, even though I didn't know who it was. Now a movie I just saw, which I otherwise like very much, features one of her songs in one scene. I have to fast forward the DVD; her voice just grates on my nerves.

Although the only exposure I've had to her is from watching The Trip to Italy where they're playing it on the car stereo. Her voice sounds shapeless and paper thin to me, but then most modern pop sounds that way to me.

I enjoyed her performance as God in Dogma.

I think she's really pretty and her voice doesn't bother me but she doesn't make music I would buy even though I didn't mind You Oughtta Know.

My kids liked her on that Nickelodeon show and I tend to be in favor of people that make my kids happy.

And that's about all I know of her.

It's mostly the voice for me, too. I actually like the melody and arrangement of "One Hand in My Pocket" or whatever it's called, but the lyrics are awful and her voice even worse.

I was just watching some of it on youtube the other night. She's not for everyone, though. My wife won't let me play it with her in the car.

She does a couple of numbers where the lyrics are insipid, one I can think of is a bit self-absorbed, but generally I really like her.

She's the theme of one of my Pandora stations.

I like The Pogues and Sid Vicious, for Chrissake! She just hits those drawn out flat notes and I want to crawl under something.

with emoting, or maybe she just was never very vocally talented, but no, I don't like her.

Don't cry for her though - she apparently made beaucoups de bucks on tech investments from the proceeds of her 90's success, and could just coast along through the rest of her life. That may be what she's actually doing since I haven't really heard much about her in the last ten years or so.

I'd never heard of her till I read your post, so I listened to some of her songs on You Tube. Her voice isn't unpleasant, but her ornamentation, if that's what it is, does sound yodelish, as another posted pointed out.

I will admit I had the JLP CD and it was one of the albums I bought in high school. However, it's probably THE MOST OVERPLAYED album there ever is, and to this day I can't stand a single song off that album.

We actually have that CD. I liked it for a few listens, and then every time after that her voice started grating on me a little more and more, to the point where I can't hear those songs, especially that stupid "one hand in my pocket" thing.

...blaring that song while pounding her hands on the steering wheel and shaking her head.

The new GF didn't like it so much.

AM was a fun act in the 1990s. Kind of the pop end of 1990s women rocker era.
