Bobby Shafto

Bobby Shafto's gone to sea
silver buckles at his knee
He'll come back and marry me
Pretty Bobby Shafto.

Bobby Shafto's bright and fair
coming out his yellow hair.
He's my love forevermore
Pretty Bobby Shafto

A familiar nursery rhyme that began as an 18th century folk song about a member of Parliament. The song relates how he broke the heart of Bridget Belasyse when he married Anne Duncombe. Bridget died of a broken heart two weeks after hearing the news, or she died of pulmonary tuberculosis two weeks before the wedding.
