Cod-bangers

In Barking, greater London in the 19th century, fishing was an important industry. Ships had sea water wells in the central hull where cod could stay alive until ready for sale. They were pulled out and killed with a blow to the head by fisherman who became known as cod-bangers. Due to the freshness of the fish, they commanded a very high price. By the 1850s the Thames was so severely polluted the fish could not survive in the wells and the fishing industry declined.
I just like the word cod-bangers.
