Groaning Cheese

The husband of a woman newly delivered (recently given birth) was responsible for providing cheese and cake to the wife and her visitors, a meal referred to as the Groaning Cheese. Sometimes pieces of the cake were preserved like wedding cake. Slices of the cheese were put in the midwife's smock, and slices placed under pillows were said to cause a young maiden to dream of her future lover.
