Billy Bob Thornton is one of my favorite actors, and the ensemble cast is great. This show is nearly as intense as Breaking bad IMHO....thoughts and opinions?

(27,084 posts)I bowed out when Malvo killed the dog.
I had been hanging on by a thread, and that was the final straw for me.
I love Martin Freeman, and was watching the show mainly because of him, but, not even he could tempt me to keep watching after that.
I just don't do well with violence, especially against animals who have done no wrong.

(2,952 posts)I can think of one child being shot and one being poisoned off hand, but their roles were vital to the plot, as was Malvo's killing of the kings dog. Malvo is a treacherous character, a sociopath of opportunity....but Malvo seems to hate bullies, and has a soft spot for Freeman's character, as he killed Freeman's protagonist unbeknownst to Freeman.
I'm sorry that the one scene caused you to lose interest in the show...it really is a quality television series and the cast is superb.
Honestly I had a similar moment while watching "pet sematary" years ago...the scene where the little boy got hit by the 18 wheeler...I walked out of the theater at that point, and couldn't watch the rest of the movie for many years afterwards.

(27,084 posts)My husband LOVED it and is currently loving Fargo as well.
I can recognize that they were / are good shows with great scripting, shooting, acting, etc., and I wouldn't try to discourage anyone from watching them. I just can't handle the violence.
My husband says I need to get "desensitized" but I have no desire to do so.

(2,952 posts)And please don't think I'm trying to push something on you. You make a good point on the desensitization, but it is difficult these days to find anything without some sort of violent content. It's almost a case of taking the lesser of two evils...

The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,658 posts)and it's especially fun for me since I am familiar with Bemidji and Duluth (though the show wasn't filmed there). The accent is awfully extreme, though - even way Up North you don't hear it quite like that. Martin Freeman's British accent leaks through a little now and then, too, which makes it sound even weirder. Even so, the show is really good - very dark and very strange.

(2,952 posts)Accents...I think it's a hat tip to Francis McDormands and William Macy's characters in the original movie.

(1,858 posts)It is an interesting show. I do like Thornton's character and I am following the show now. I was a fan of Breaking Bad, and while there is a level of suspense, intensity, and unexpected events that make the show enjoyable. At this time I rate Breaking Bad as much better. Aside from the female cop trying to solve the murders, I don't think there are any other characters I have much sympathy for.
