There are those among us who have labelled themselves as representative of true progressives, true leftists, true Democrats, and have, in the doing, labelled all of those who disagree with their every agenda item as somehow being less worthy, less valid, less sincere in our efforts to see this country move forward rather than backward, as though such labels self-proclaimed and self-affixed are to be accepted without question, or factual support.
We are and always have been, forever and ever, amen the party of the Big Tent. Our strength has always been not our sameness, but our diversity; our sweeping inclusion of the centrists, the moderately-left, the extreme left, and everyone who falls within the scope of those who desire change for the better, immediate or painstakingly gradual, as the case may be.
Youre either with us or against us. Its a phrase that, once uttered by one G.W. Bush, immediately fell into disrepute. Accepted as a RW talking point and nothing more, it lost its true meaning as a rallying cry for those of us who, on the left, pose it as a valid question. You are either with us or against us you are either with the Democrats who, with all of their failings and flaws, are for progress or you are with those who would see our nation move backwards in opposition to every step forward the Democrats have made, no matter how slight you might perceive such steps to be.
There are times when we must choose our battles not only against the other side, but amongst ourselves. There are times when we must, as a widely diverse group, speak up as individuals and there are times when we must speak with one voice.
The time to speak as one is now.

My name is David Allen, and I am the lead administrator of Democratic Underground. Like the vast majority of people here on DU, I was surprised and dismayed to learn of your resignation as the public face of the anti-war movement. Even more upsetting to me is the fact that apparently a post here on my website was one of the reasons for your decision.
I am going to try to keep this note relatively brief. I cannot match the eloquence of your public statement, or the eloquence of the many people on Democratic Underground and elsewhere who have asked you to reconsider. My intent is merely to add my voice to the huge chorus of people who believe you are a vital voice in the anti-war movement. As the administrator of Democratic Underground I would like the opportunity to provide a little bit of context with regard the offending post referenced in your resignation letter. Having read your statement, I know that the post here on DU was not the only reason you made the decision you did, but it seems that that post may have been the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back.
The most important thing I think you should know is this: The vast majority of DU members support you and your efforts to bring an end to this terrible war. That has been true for as long as you have been fighting to end it -- as you know from the many DUers who stood with you at Camp Casey and elsewhere. It remains true today.
I understand how frustrating it is to give your heart and soul to something, and then get personally insulted for it. It is even worse when those insults come from people who are supposed to be our friends and allies. I am not going to provide an excuse or justification for that ugly post -- the person who posted it does not in any way speak for me or most of people on this website. But I am also not going to lie to you and tell you that it was posted by a troll. As far as I can tell, the person who posted it is a legitimate member of this site. (As an aside, the specific language used was not acceptable under the rules of this website, and the post in question was deleted by the moderators for that reason.)

The list is very inadequate. I'll repeat the thanks and appreciation I expressed to my fellow DUers in this thread: http://www.democraticunderground.com/1018602885
It's been many years since I stumbled into DU after being thrown out of Democrats.com. It occurs to me that those of us with 10K or more posts should have done something productive with our time, like writing novels or running for public office.
1/4/2008 doesn't seem like that long ago (I did some lurking before that), but it's been 6 years and 10,000 (more or less) posts ago.
I'm sure you have interesting memories of the past 6+ years at DU. What did you find interesting?

(152,204 posts)I haven't been over to DU2 in a while, and I had forgotten that thread.
It made me smile...
The Lounge war threads did not make me smile, but that's OK. They certainly happened and I'm so glad they're over. So. Glad.
DU is my electronic home, and my life has changed for the better, because of the people and experiences that have come my way.
So, there's that.

(10,000 posts)I've kidded you over the years about the welding poem, but I admit that I miss when you and Blue Iris used to post poetry in the Lounge.
The Lounge Wars did not make me smile, but they were a spectacle. To this day, I'd love somebody to explain them to me. In reviewing thse threads, I'm amazed at who is gone and who is still here. Some were TS's; some left; some ended up on that site we're all not supposed to talk about; and I gather many are on Facebook.
I'm glad (and I hope that Skinner is glad) that your life and the lives of others have been changed by DU.

38. This is like walking into a room where everyone is arguing in Basque
and threatening each other with spatulas and pinwheels. Completely incomprehensible but fascinating nonetheless.

There were others, but that one sticks out in my memory, for whatever reason.

(8,492 posts)That Lounge crap happened before I got here. Glad I missed it.
I've seen minor flames pop up in here, but they're put out quickly. I'll say it over and over again, there are people in The Lounge that 'out there' I disagree with 99% of the time, but 'in here' they make me laugh, cry, swoon, etc. The Lounge is probably the #1 reason I have zero on ignore. I don't wanna miss anything.
It's just a web site, right? Maybe a little more...love it in here.

Thank God (or whatever compartment you keep your sense of mystery in) Buckaroo Banzai has it correct:
"Hey, hey, hey, hey-now. Don't be mean; we don't have to be mean, cuz, remember, no matter where you go, there you are."
Unfortunately, like Dr. Who, I am a very dangerous fellow when I don't know what I'm doing.
I strive for Tobin S. or California Peggy nice, but I'm not always successful...

(21,925 posts)by a guy who would start a discussion about something seemingly innocuous. Then after a dozen or more responses on point, he (she?) would completely change the original thread and edit the subject matter in a way that made the responders seem absolutely insane or sometimes morally sick to anyone just clicking on it. I thought it was rather clever and funny. Was there a guy calling himself ZombieWoof? I think that might have been the one pulling these kinds of pranks. I didn't visit the Lounge very often that long ago but I vaguely remember those crazy threads.
