The DU Lounge

Kick and rec if you thing the Lounge should be the MFM Lounge forever. Who knows if an admin will see it, but it is worth a shot.

I might be able to support this, but a permanent smilie makes more sense to me.
This way, if another person we all think highly about comes to an untimely demise(since MFM is F-ing Immortal GDmit), we may be able to consider another smilie, and create a legend.
This was initially proposed by Ptah:

I agreed with him, and I put it up here.

(36,413 posts)There are so many creative people on DU, we could have a contest & folks could submit their smilies to be voted on.

(17,175 posts)... I have a feeling that he would have been the first to agree that the Lounge is about more than him. So I would say "no."

(20,176 posts)but beyond a short memorial, this is a meaningless gesture. It's nice that the admins did it, but it loses meaning as a permanent gesture especially if it is done in lieu of a real memorial act.
Further, it's not a habit we should get into...he's not the first notable and beloved member we've lost. Do we go back and name other forums for the notable members we've lost whose contributions were primarily in there? What about when we have conflict...there's about 6 people each who LBN and GD could/should be named for.
If we want to do something nice and permanent...dig up the thread from last week about donating in his name and spearhead making that happen or contact Kali to ask about chipping in for his funeral expenses or perhaps a tree in his name in the park (I believe he's being cremated and did not want a fancy ceremony or a stone) or something for the wonderful people who took care of him on his too-frequent visits to the hospital.

(20,776 posts)I suspect there will be many GIANTS passing though the lounge over the years. It would be unfair to them to give him this singular honor, and not honor future potential recipients. A Smiley would be great, though I wonder what it would look like, and how it would be used.

(22,000 posts)I think forever is not realistic. The admins would catch hell if they ever needed to rename it for some reason or another.
