In fact, I walked out of the theater as the VC were running Elias down and the helicopter was lifting off. My husband found me in the lobby afterwards waiting for him.

And that was that. I've never been able to watch another war movie again.

So I'll answer your poll if I ever manage to screw up my emotional courage enough to get through it....

for Elias...

I'm simply incapable of watching a war movie. They hurt my soul to the core.

This has been a major impetus in protesting the Afghanistan and the Iraq wars for me.

Its just unbearable for me to witness the anguish, pain, futility, and horror of war. While fully recognising that in light of that it behooves me to do what I can to stop anyone else suffering.

Thanks for your empathetic reply.

I thought platoon was one of the weaker of the great Vietnam War films of the time.

But don't quote me as any kind of authority. I just can't endure any of them anymore.

No that I do not love the other films you mentioned, I just love this film as well. Berringer and Dafoe are simply amazing.

I loved seeing Willem Dafoe, typecast as a baddie due to his sinister features, play such a saintly role.

He did well, his agonizing death presaging his role as Jesus in The Last Temptation Of Christ.
