Happy 81st anniversary to America’s longest married couple

Here’s some good news from the marital front. Connecticut couple Ann and John Betar are celebrating 81 years of marriage today, a record that makes them the longest married couple in the U.S. Ann, 98 and John, 102, eloped to Harrison, New York in 1932 as teenagers.

For the children of a tight-knit Syrian community in Bridgeport the out-of-town wedding wasn’t just a romantic touch, it was a necessity. Ann’s father was set on her marrying a man of his choosing that was some twenty years her senior. A high speed ride out of town in John’s Ford Roadster saved the day and here they are 81 years later.

In an interview last week John recalled the reaction of their families when the couple returned.

“Everyone was hopping mad, and my wife’s aunt consoled my father-in-law by telling him not to worry, the marriage won’t last.” he chuckled, clearly having proven his in-laws wrong.

They've been together so long they look alike! They both have white hair, they both have glasses, both have hands resting on their laps, both have exactly the same smiles. If that isn't happiness, I've never seen it.
