Hostile work environment?

Has anyone here ever pursued this? My complaint is against one particular colleague who is very controlling about workspace to the point of affecting my work.

What is your opinion? Worth the effort or ignore it? This is a public school and unionized.

... unless you can establish that you are being singled ought as a member of a protected class. I.e Age, sex, race, orientation, etc.

At least in NYS.

Let's hear from some lawyer-types.

I would see if they can negotiate a sort of peace settlement without resorting to formal action.

I'm still in the information-gathering and thinking-about-it phase. I think the building rep is her buddy.

I did try that at first but was pretty much ignored. She is unreasonable. Because of our schedules, we don't cross paths much... and when we do, it is stony silence.

I think the suggestion about going to the union is good... and I thought of a trustworthy person to approach. I'll try that tomorrow after I check out the contract and the employee's handbook.

My hostile work environment is coming from my supervisor.

I also work in a public school environment, and am represented by a union.

Unfortunately, I don't think they can do much for me, unless I can prove I am being discriminated against because of my age.

I hope you have better luck.

I went to the union rep today and she will approach the principal. We'll see..... I just hope I didn't open up a can of worms, but I'm sick of this sh*t.

Sexual harassment falls into one of two (or both) categories. It's either quid pro quo (e.g. sleep with me and you'll get promoted) or a hostile work environment (e.g. sexually suggestive atmosphere that is pervasive and ongoing).

If your co-worker or boss is an asshole, that might be what some describe as a hostile work environment, but not as far as EEO law is concerned.

What is a hostile work
environment?

A hostile work environment is a form of
harassment. It is demonstrated by such
severe and pervasive conduct that
permeates the work environment and
interferes with an employee’s ability to
perform his or her job.

source: US Dept. of Interior brochure.

It definitely has interfered with my ability to perform my job. I talked to the union rep today. The other person also has union rights, so we will see how it shakes out.
