I just ran into this really weird movie called "Idiocracy" on Comedy Central.

It's crude, but slyly funny. It's only the first commercial, and I'm already in hysterics!

1. I love that movie!

Little-known fact: it's a documentary

3. Exactly!

The first time I saw it I thought it was really funny but then I watched it again after some thought and hmmmm, it certainly has begun to look familiar

One of my favorites.

6. I had seen it mentioned briefly on DU a few times,

but always in such a way I thought they were talking about a documentary!

2. I love that movie. According to IMDB it was never released in theaters because the

brass thought it was too dumb. With all the other stuff that comes from Hollywood, that is hard to believe.

Sometimes I like some just mindless and silly comedy. This fits the bill nicely.

4. It was too anti-corporate

And unfriendly to advertisers is my guess.

"Welcome to Carl's Junior now with extra big-ass fries. Carl's Junior: fuck you, I'm eating!"

Brilliant stuff.

8. After I posted this, I re-read what was said. You are right - it was too anti-corporate.

Wouldn't it be something if this becomes a cult classic

10. It is well on its way to becoming a cult classic.

Heck, nearly everyone I know has seen it at this point

18. Mike Judge is a superb observer of human behavior.

I can't count how many times a patient has come to me, obese, and with his teeth rotting out of his head, telling me: "I drink lots of Gatorade! It's good for you, right?"

When I told one patient that it's actually horrible, horrible stuff that no one should drink, he actually said: "But it's got electrolytes!"

I flashed back to when I had seen 'Idiocracy', and got very depressed...

11. The concept is brilliant..

One expects the population to be smarter in the future, this says...nope. Did not work out that way.

You need to watch the uncensored version. Family Style has a whole new meaning among my friends.

25. You wonder where the geniuses are hiding

And you know there are some because there is shit in this movie, like the extreme surveillance state, that couldn't be set up by single digit IQs.

30. Observe closely and you'll notice...

That the infrastructure, such as it is, is aged, dilapidated and often malfunctioning. This "infrastructure", the surveillance state and the like was set up in the distant past by those with more intelligence but is maintained ( poorly ) by the dim-witted characters in the movie.

28. IMO it's a film that's much less effective than its concept

I know that I'm in the super-minority here @ DU, but I don't care for the film.

I really wanted to like it, too. When I first heard about it, it sounded like a great idea. And it was.

Alas, the film doesn't live up to the expectation.

Started out funny, but turned boring once it more or less became an action film.

29. Yes, it's true.

The idea was considerably better than the execution. But it's rare for a comedy with this much crudeness in it to give you something to think about once the laughter stops.

33. "And the number one movie in the country was called Ass"

" and that's all it was, for ninety minutes. It won eight Oscars that year, including best screenplay."

The scene with the doctor and his medical diagnosis was funny: "it says here on your chart that you're fucked up and your shit's all retarded."
