The Great Bermuda Shorts Caper. (more about high school garb)

This was circa 1956.
A friend was hit by a car while riding his bike.
No serious injuries, no broken bones, but he did have to SPECTACULARLY skinned knees and shins.

He had big bandages on both legs from the knees down.
His mom, very practical, sent him to school in ...GASP...BERMUDA SHORTS!

When I arrived at school that day I saw a huge crowd of kids in front of the main entrance. I elbowed my way through and there in the middle was my friend.
You would have thought he had showed up nude.
Catcalls and taunts.
"Who cut off your britches?"
"Aren't you in long pants yet?"
"SISSY!"

You. Did. Not. Wear. Shorts. To. School.
period
At the time, I don't think I even owned a pair.

The Vice Principal came out.
He was the school disciplinarian.
Had a paddle in his office, which he used.
But just on the guys

He took my buddy into the office.
Called his mom and told her he was 'creating a disturbance' and to come get him.
She did and that was his last day in public school.
His family was wealthy and he was sent to a private school.
We kind of drifted apart after that.
