(10,129 posts)Luckily, we can usually limit out in about 20 minutes.. then, it`s off to the dock to toss in the crab rings and smoke cigars & drink scotch while they soak lol. Might run through the state park and see if any spring mushrooms are showing too.. my buddy`s been a forager for about 40 years.. He swears by dandelions.. I`m gonna have to have him prepare me some sometime.

(10,129 posts)He`s been getting mushrooms out of there for years. Probably a little too early yet, but since we didn`t get too harsh of a winter we may get lucky.

(10,642 posts)When I was a kid growing up in Portland in the 50's, we went there a couple of times. Fun!
opiate69
(10,129 posts)And we usually also go down to Cranberry beach in Grayland. For crabs we go down to the dock in Tokeland. I haven`t been to Long Beach yet, but so want to. My wife`s aunt has a beach house somewhere out there that allegedly is available to us.. just haven`t taken her up on it yet

(6,795 posts)We dug for clams, threw out the crab rings, had a bonfire every night, drank like fish, took loooonnnggg walks with the doggies, laughed our butts off and ate like royalty.....oysters and sourdough almost every day as an afternoon "snack".
Have a good time!

(10,129 posts)We got skunked, but there had been a lot of pressure at our spot that weekend.

(6,795 posts)Got a few crabs. Threw a lot back cause we had the wrong info about what size we could keep. A guy in a boat told us the correct info the day before we left. My friend's 10 yr old daughter still had a blast though! And, the people camping next to us gave us about 7 crabs...we had them over for dinner and had a feast. My friend is a most awesome cook.
I have fallen in love with No Cal.
And my friends are camping up in Oregon for the 4th. Cannot wait to go!
opiate69
(10,129 posts)Kinda sucky about the crab snafu, but at least now you know for next time, and you did still get to keep a few.. better than we did lol.
blueamy66
(6,795 posts)There just aren't any single guys camping!
It seems to be all couples - and then there is me, the third wheel.

(6,795 posts)My friend invited a co-worker up to camp with us for a few nights. Turns out he is a die hard Republican and we really didn't see eye to eye on anything. Heck, we don't even like the same golfers.
But, he was fun to go on walks with...as long as we didn't speak of anything too deep.
But now I know that I can only hang with someone who doesn't give a rat's ass about politics or is a Dem.
I wish I knew the name of the campground in Oregon....

(10,129 posts)The entire coast is fucking epic so I know you`re going to have an absolute blast... if it`s anywhere near the sea lion caves, you should definitely try to go check them out too.
blueamy66
(6,795 posts)I'll check into the caves.
Don't know where I'll be in July, but hope to go with her.

(6,261 posts)Isn't it amazing how nice and friendly everybody here (Seattle in my case) is on a day like this? Just ordinary day-to-day encounters in the grocery store, the bank, etc. People seem more courteous and nicer.
I'm probably just projecting my good mood at other people, but still.

EvilAL
(1,437 posts)not as good as the clams we usually dig, I'll have to look that up.
Thanks for the offer, but you don't have to cook me some of yours, we'll go dig up a feed and cook 'em right there.

opiate69
(10,129 posts)I grew up in Connecticut.. I think we called them either just "steamers" or little necks.. they call 'em butter clams out this way.. either way, I just call 'em damned tasty!
EvilAL
(1,437 posts)from different places and stuff, but the Bay of Chaleur clams are the best. Quahogs and razor clams were good too, harder to get though. We used to dig on Heron Island where there weren't as many, but they were big ,usually you buy them or dig them and they are white, but when they are big and old, they are mostly blue. Those are the ones we go for.
EvilAL
(1,437 posts)maybe in another couple of weeks the ice will be gone and we can go get some..

(10,129 posts)that I've been able to find "stuffies" out here.. one of the things I missed most about the NorthEast.

(10,129 posts)We got to the beach at about 9 Sunday morning, and had our limits on clams by 9:30. Went out to the dock at about 10:30 pm to catch the incoming tide for crabs, and sat there till about 4am and got skunked.. probably caught a hundred crabs, but no keepers.. oh well.. was still a great weekend.
