Have we now gotten to the point where there are three distinct television "seasons" a year?

From what I gather, we have the Fall Season that goes from September to December.

The Winter/Spring Season from January to May.

The Summer Season from June to August.

Granted, most of the the established network shows go from Sept/Oct through May. But tt seems that more and more lately, you have TV shows only designed for one of those three seasons. The summer season, especially, is becoming the time for non-network/cable shows to shine, while the network shows are divided between the Fall and Winter/Spring seasons. The two show I was most looking forward to this year haven't even started yet: Alcatraz and The River. The Walking Dead, meanwhile specifically broke up their episodes to fit into both seasons. Modern Family on ABC took almost a month long break and is now back for the winter season.

Baseball from early March to the end of September (normally the end of August for me, as I am a Pirates fan), and then a little basketball squeezed in between those two.

not even PBS. leads to some stinkeroo nights.
But mostly we watch Olbermann or MSNBC, so it don't matter to us.

ETA - when I think about it, no one puts anything on Saturday anymore and friday is a pile also.
So mostly it is Sunday - Thursday + weekends off, + no programming on Monday of football season.
