(4,076 posts)We already know that General Ripper is a fervent anti-communist in a position to start World War III.
Now we discover that he's psychotic.
That's a bad combination, to say the least.

(29,414 posts)It makes me think of some of the camera angles used in Citizen Kane
Gen. Turgidson's reading of the transcript where he has to mention the "fluids" part is pretty funny, too

(4,076 posts)as indeed he was. Sterling Hayden was a big guy. Compare his performance as a heavy in "The Godfather".
The measured phrases, with pauses, showed that Gen. Ripper was confident. He knew in his heart that he was doing the right thing, and that nobody could stop him.
As I remember, General Turgidson slowed down and looked confused when he got to the "precious bodily fluids".
All the actors were funny as hell. It's hard to say which scene was the funniest.
IMHO this is Kubrick's best movie.

(29,414 posts)so thank you for reminding me
So, can I include myself in "the younger people" at age 50?
you can include yourself! Age 54 here! We had a city council member here in Erie, Pa., a WW2 vet and an outstanding democrat. He hosted "Prairie Home companion" when they were in Erie. However, he had that cold war thing going on. till his dying day he fought - successfully- to keep our water from being flouridated. They had to wait until he passed away to do it, he was that powerful.

(4,076 posts)I did remember that the Birchers thought Ike was a tool of the communists. This was enough to alienate the more intellectual conservatives, like William F. Buckley.
My friend Wikipedia tells me that the Birchers
"opposed water fluoridation, which it ... saw as a communist plot to poison Americans."

(4,076 posts)His reason has nothing to do with the international communist conspiracy.
Nowadays people drink so much bottled water that it's impossible to tell how much fluoride the kids are getting if the tap water is fluoridated. It's important that they get just the right amount. He can make sure of that only for kids who live in a neighborhood where the water is not fluoridated.
