The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsMy Dad was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer yesterday.
He's 87. Quit smoking 50 years ago. The cancer is inoperable, and radiation is not an option. The doctors are going to try chemo, in the hope that it puts the cancer in remission. If it doesn't, he's got 6 to 9 months.
He went into the hospital on Thanksgiving Day for what they thought was pneumonia. My brothers didn't tell me about it until yesterday, six days later.
Your thoughts and prayers are most appreciated, my friends. This has been a rough year.

I am so very sorry to hear this dreadful news, sweetie...
I hope he will respond to the chemo. If he doesn't, then you have time to say goodbye...

Your OP here shows that there are far more important things going on in people's lives then much of what goes on in Meta.

Do you think you can find an experimental program to enlist your father in. I know I found one for my Mom with her problems, she just rejected it because she did not want an autopsy and to be used as a learning tool, but I think it would have extended her life by years.
Some times the trials get you the best care.

(23,340 posts)He was 88, it was inoperable, he opted for no chemo because the outcome is unchanged. All they can do is give painkillers, which left him so doped up that there was not much quality of life.
I hope that whatever happens for you dad that is as peaceful and pain-free as possible.

(21,977 posts)I'll let you know how things go. He's scheduled for a PET scan to determine where it has spread. I'm pretty much bracing for the worst.
But you, my friends, are the best.

(21,977 posts)PET scan scheduled for tomorrow. We'll know then how far it's spread. I'm not optimistic; don't expect this to be good news.
Pop's had some bad days since last report.
I'm going dow to Tennessee this weekend; more or less to say goodbye.

(32,074 posts)My grandpa died from that, although that was more than 30 years ago. Things have changed since then. One of my gym buddies is a five year (so far) survivor. Keeping my fingers crossed that your dad does that well, too.
It' really HAS been a shitty year. A friend of mine was just diagnosed with Stage III pancreatic cancer. She's one of the nicest, funniest people you'd ever want to meet, and she sure as hell doesn't deserve this.

When I was a kid, I saw my grandfather with his shirt off after the surgeon removed one of his lungs due to cancer. I think he was a smoker, but I don't recall; I'll have to ask Mom sometime.
I hope the chemo produces some good results for your father soon. Hang in there.

(21,977 posts)Pop has nodules on the other lung and on his trachea, but it hasn't spread elsewhere. I'm confused now, becuase they're still calling it Stage IV, but if I understnd that, Stage IV by definition means it has spread outside the chest.
Anyway, I think this is good news. They're starting chemo today.
Meanwhile, my dipshit brothers still haven't told me what's going on. I get my news from family friends. I'm going to Tennessee this weekend to see Pop, and taking his favorite grandson with me! Hopefully that will cheer him up!
Thank you to all my DU brothers and sisters, who are better and closer than my actual "brothers." God bless you all!
