What is it with some people and wearing short pants all the time?

My workplace is quite the eclectic melting pot of personalities, but I notice this among others as well. What is with some who wear short pants all the freaking time, like it's some extension of their pseudo more hedonistic than thou beach bum persona. All these Jimmy Buffet wannabes are moaning about the arrival of fall's cool weather that most of us welcome with open arms...dreamed of as we suffered through a sweltering summer.

Full disclosure: I don't wear short pants. Well, I'll lounge about my house and patio in the summer in them, and spend poolside or at the beach in swim trunks and a T-shirt, but that's just because long pants are impractical and unnecessary in those situations...that is, as a response to certain conditions. I can understand that when it's hot, some can see the need and desire to do so. I'm talking about those who will wear long pants only where decorum specifically requires it, or when the temperatures are intolerably cold. Even then, many thin blooded types constantly bitch about the cooling of fall and early winter; even as they don jackets, hats and hoodies over their short panted bottoms. WTF? It's as stupid as me complaining of the summer heat while wearing insulated carhart coveralls.

Must be a north/south cultural thing.

I have Raynauds and wear socks all year long, although they're thinner in the summer.

I'll see people running around in flip flops in below 50 degree weather and cringe in pain.

who wore shorts every day year long. Sometimes they would show up in sweats but by 9am they were down to shorts even when working outside. We would get a kick out of the news reports of bad weather shutting down cities back east after we had received several inches of snow almost every night. One guarded secret here in Colorado, the sun shines, at least for a little while, almost every day!

Actually some of the students go all year. And with the students shorts seem more common with the heavier guys.

If I never had to wear anything nicer than jeans, I'd be happy. And I often wear a hoodie while wearing shorts. I sometimes get a cold torso or head (what with being bereft of hair) and the hoodie helps. On the other hand, my feet are naturally warm to the point where I almost always sleep with my feet out from under the covers.

From Nov. - March, it's a pretty good bet that the weather will be "50 degrees and rainy." Hell, sometimes it's that in June. And yet shorts are the thing to wear, apparently.
