Who was the best Charlie Chan?

Warner Oland

Sydney Toler

Roland Winters

Toler was arguably the most famous Chan.
And Winters the lesser known.

The character is based on a real person, Honolulu policeman Chang Opana.

Lots of interesting stuff at wiki:

I'd sit on the floor right in front of a radio that was taller than I was.
I think it was a Zenith.

The local indie station showed it back in the early-mid 1960s. The radio show was before my time.

We lived near Chicago in the late 60s.
A Chicago TV station had "Charlie Chan Theater" on Saturday afternoons.
I'd stretch out on the couch (usually nursing a hangover in those days) and zone out watching Chan's next adventure.
I don't think I made to the end of a single one.

it has to be Sydney Toler. He is the definitive version of Charlie Chan.

Then again, so is the Texas Ranger - - who was really a bounty hunter and often hunted runaway slaves...

But...um...history....

Lots of twists and turns, and well-written. I read them when I was 12-13 and loved them. It always seemed to me that Charlie Chan was by far the smartest and most quick-witted character in the books and I really admired that.
