Damn it! I did. $1700 bucks later, well, I hope I enjoy my new toys. Do seem pretty cool.

He's shopping for a laptop...
I don't think he'll be spending $1700, though...
Enjoy your new toys!

(6,581 posts)I bought an iPad and an MP3/video player thingy, the iPod Touch.
And yes, I agreed to EVERYTHING without reading it. That does not bode well.

(224 posts)The MOST expensive iPad with a cellular data plan is $829 and the most expensive iPod Touch is $399.

(53,339 posts)That would be my guess.
Not to disparage dennimi, because we all know how, after the salesperson has been at you and at you and at you, we're ready to buy the undercoating just to get the whole damn thing over with.

There must be other toys too. I'll read about them here. That's cheaper than exploring the store.

(6,581 posts)Yup, the ipad was about 800 --probably what you said, $829. I got the 32gb Touch, so that was $299. Maintenance agreements for both were $99 each IIRC. I also got a keyboard, $99, a pair of really good Bose earphones that actually feel nice and don't kill my ears, OK, that was an indulgence, $169 (yikes!), and a case cover thing for the iPad $50. Another $50 to activate a month of AT&T. And sales tax which is 6% in Michigan. So it was like 1656 plus the $50 to AT&T.

(6,581 posts)Anyone know why it won't let me load a lot of videos off of youtube that I can watch on my PC. For example, it won't load and play content from the VEVO channels of any of the musical acts I've tried, uploaded via big name record companies.
I don't see anything in settings that is off. When I tried to load, it just says "not available." I think its being blocked for contractual reasons between the various corporate players.

(13,661 posts)They're monsters, just like Microsoft is.
Please reconsider your Apple fixation. They're a bunch of yuppie asshats who have, with the ridiculous lawsuit, destroyed innovation in this country. Patents my ass.
I'm not kidding.

(6,581 posts)First time I ever bought anything Apple.
I'm sorry, now I feel bad. I doubt it's returnable, though.

(13,661 posts)I just am appalled at the way this lawsuit turned out.
If you'd bought Samsung, you'd have probably had problems with coverage, service, etc., down the line if Apple has its way.
I'm just waiting for Nokia to make a comeback (though unfortunately they've paired with Microsoft). Go Finland!
TheCruces
(224 posts)Samsung didn't exactly have much innovation in copying Apple.
ALL computer companies are a bunch of yuppy asshats.
Flaxbee
(13,661 posts)as virginal and pure as the driven snow, when they lifted their first successful product (iPod) directly from a Taiwanese company.
And now Apple is trying to limit consumer choice here in the US by seeking to have Samsung products banned. Monopolies do that.
Many of the patents Apple claimed were theirs belong to others; some notably to Adobe. If you're not a corporate Goliath, you can't even dream of challenging Apple...
Part of the problem started with the Bush Administration (43) when he gave the USPTO free rein to patent damn near everything in order to 'compete' with foreign corporations. The patent system is so confused and messed up now it's hard to know who really owns or invented what. And when first-to-file comes into play, game over.
If you're a small corporation, or an individual, this really does have a chilling effect on innovation.
So while I agree, all computer companies are unbearably smug yuppy asshats, Apple took it to a new level of mendacity with this bogus, whiny, bullshit suit. Fuck them. I want Samsung products (or I did until S. Korea decided to start whaling again). But I WANT diversity; I've never liked the Apple cult and don't want Apple products. I want variety, not the richest company in the history of the world to tell me what I can and cannot buy.
Yes, corporate overlord, please limit my choices! Please make it so all I can buy is either Apple crap or Microsoft crap (and of course, each company owns enough of the other's stock so that it doesn't make a damn bit of difference which one I buy!)

(37,648 posts)is it's not the initial buying of a product that is the costly part. You can't even USE most of the stuff unless you sign up for some complicated contract that you pay monthly forever and ever, that lets you use it. Or it has a wifi capability, which is useless to me. What am I going to do...go sit in a Starbucks? Why would I do that?
And that iTunes and iPod craze that was here a few years ago? Boy, times sure have changed. But I learned that if you bought the Apple iPod, you could ONLY buy music from their "special" music store...or iTunes.
Like the circus mogul said, "There's a sucker born every minute." I falll victim to some rackets, but this is one I caught onto long ago. I do not buy Apple products. I DO own some Apple stock, though. I have total faith in the gullibility of Americans when it comes to electronics. I bought it a few months ago, and it's up over 10%. So thank you for that, Denninmi! From your pocket into mine!

(6,581 posts)That's ok, if all I can do with this stuff is get online when I'm not around wifi, and have an MP3 that's easy to access my music how I want it, I'll be happy.

(6,581 posts)I just synched my entire music collection to date from my PC onto the iPod Touch. Damn that's nice, about a million times easier to navigate through the songs than the cheap MP3 player I own.
I mean, DAMN that's nice.
FWIW, I still haven't read any of the user agreements. "It won't read!" (little in-joke for any other South Park fans who might read this).

(23,266 posts)I can "rip" vinyl to iPod via the PC, but it's tedious and slow. I'm making my way through a bunch of LPs.
I sorta like the scratchy sound when the needle drops onto the vinyl and then finds the groove. It sounds good with earbuds or through the car speakers.
