Parents were immigrants and Mom only cooked the foods they ate back in Estonia. They were suspicious of American foods.

Mom's first attempt at an "American" dish was spaghetti and meatballs. She decided that the red gravy wasn't thick enough, so she stirred in a good amount of sour cream. And voila! Pink spaghetti sauce!

I've seen stories calling it both real and a hoax!

It's British, so considering some other stuff that they eat, it may very well be real.
