Pet peeve #46: Cashier expects tip

The new registers where cashiers turn the screen and ask you to sign after a purchase are annoying.

The screen asks you whether you want to tip while the cashier stares at you to see if you do. Itís a scam. How about employers start paying employees adequately instead of turning them into beggars?

1. I'm sick of these corporations begging us to donate to every single group

Latest is Office Depot asking to donate school supplies for kids. I told them to call corporate to donate. Iím sick of it. Grocery and drug stores are the worst. They get everyone to donate. Corporation donate the money and gets a write off. Is it any wonder why they donít pay taxes. Plus they get to brag about how charitable they are.

28. It cracks me up no matter how many times I've watched it.

So well done, like when the cashier itemizes what Randy has purchased, it's items like vodka, beer, ice cream, filets, chocolate-covered peanuts, pizza pockets, etc. And then of course there's the 'change' machine!

5. That can't be a cashier at Whole Foods.

No visible body piercings, no tattoos, and no extreme hair. I can't recall ever seeing a cashier at Whole Foods that didn't have at least one of the above.

That really caught my attention.

14. Oh well, ok.

I was at Whole Foods today, and the cashier was a lady about my age with greying hair, no tattoos that I could see...not sure why that would even matter?

15. Obviously you never went shopping at the Whole Foods in downtown Austin.

I went there about twice a week for lunch during the 90s for about five years. I can't recall ever being checked out by a cashier that didn't fit within the profile I described. I would tend to agree with you that someone looking "different" shouldn't have any bearing upon my shopping experience, but it seems like the cashiers that worked there were among some of the least helpful and least sociable people in Austin which contrasts with the friendly atmosphere I found at almost every other business in the city.

Why did I go there? It was the only grocery store within walking distance of the office and I would also stop in occasionally since they carried my favorite brand of beer so I didn't have to make a detour when driving home.

16. Oh, well that's a shame. I have to agree with you on the friendly thing.

An indifferent attitude or unfriendly one will turn me away from a business in a a skinny second.

Some places don't have a mechanism for tipping.

9. Why should you have to tip every person?

I understood during the pandemic when you were asked to tip everywhere including for carry out food that you had to go pick up, but you are still asked if you want to tip for that same service.

12. Right. My understanding of tipping is that it's for the "extra"

service effort.

Why should I tip the person who just scanned my eggs? Itís an imposition and really employers need to dial it back.

26. Well, go on with your bad self

The similarity between you an Mr. Pink is the grandiose rationalizations you offer for not wanting to tip.

I accept that you feel justified in your choice, for the reasons you gave. So did Mr. Pink, for the reasons he gave.

You do you.
