I think a lot of people who play and don't solve the puzzle don't post their loss. So what you see are only those who are actually successful. I would also think there are some who use assistance. So lets say you have 3 out of the 5 letters. You might get some help by googling for example: 5 letter word ending in abc. Then by process of elimination you may solve the puzzle. No different than if you were trying to solve a crossword puzzle and needed some help.

You're only competing against yourself, so whatever assistance you need to solve and satisfy yourself is up to you.

And no you're not stupid.

I think we’re not only self reporting but self congratulating. It’s human nature not to crow about the failures and so the sample is bound to be biased toward successful game players.
I have an above average vocabulary, a knack for word play and puzzles and a highly competitive nature. I’m averaging just under 4 tries per game over 53 games played, pardon the self congratulating reporter, but the game is in my sweet spot. Not that I am smarter or lesser score is stupider but that we all have talents that shine in different lights.

Ps, stupid doesn’t question their own capability, see that Dunning-Kruger effect.

as much as a game of strategy.

I start every game using up the first two rows with two words that contain all possible vowels (including Y). They are my same two starter words for every game.

Once I know what vowel(s) I’m dealing with, and what consonants are left after those first two rows, then I usually get it on the third or fourth row.
