The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI was sorta counting my blessings this morning---I have food, clothing and a warm dry place to sleep
---and thinking of those not similarly situated. Something my mother used to say as she struggled to make ends meet came to mind: "The Lord must love poor people---he made so many of us!"
When I count my blessings, she is at the top of the list.
May we all begin to heal in 2022.

thought that morals should never be legislated, and
that government should help the poor.

(48,966 posts)to count your blessings, especially at the start of the day. One of the best things you can do for yourself.

(2,357 posts)because the Colorado fire video footage this a.m. brought tears to my eyes. These tragedies occur every day, but they seem so much sadder when they occur during the holidays.

Happy holidays!

(312 posts)I believe, as maybe you do, that it's best to literally "count" them. Not in a casual way, but in a take them out and feel them kind of way. That way, they really do count. That way they really do have a tendency to multiply.
As you say, may your blessings and indeed blessings for all the world multiply in 2022.
And the best thing we can do is what you did. Count our own and then pass the practice on and share it with others.
God bless.
And I guess I'll dare to say it - not a "Christian" God, but just God. Because one is one, and let's not fuss over what name to call it but just appreciate the universe that gave us this life to play in.

(12,051 posts)a whole lot of sympathy when my brother or I complained about something 'terrible' like not getting a certain toy, or having a bad cold, etc. She said:
"You'll live!!!"

(1,428 posts)I gave up on the classic New Years resolutions and resolved to do my best to do a good deed every day. Most are simle- letting a driver into the line of traffic, distracting a lively child to give Mom a break, remembering to give to those with so much less, in my case to have some cash ready for the needy person with a sign, especially as I am leaving the supermarket lot with $100. in groceries in my car.
Sometimes it is just an understanding smile.
Yesterday with a few like minded customers as we organized the Dungeness Crab Line at local market. So nice- everyone was happy, even the market staff.
Very simple but so nice that everyone was cooperative and happy.
Happy New Year!

Here's the first verse:
Ive got a warm place to sleep.
Some nights I lie awake counting gifts,
Instead of counting sheep.
Ive got a heart that can hold love;
Ive got a mind that can think.
There may be times when I lose the light,
And let my spirits sink.
But I cant stay depressed,
When I remember how Im blessed!
Grateful, grateful, truly grateful I am.
Grateful, grateful, truly blessed and duly grateful."
As an alcoholic looking forward to my 43rd sober NYE in a row, thanks for reminding me of this song, Atticus!
(I believe the song is definitely worth listening to in its entirety.)

i've got less money than i did when all this started, but i'm still a long way from broke.
i do wish i didnt know how many of the people in my life are actually abject assholes, but hey, always good to know the truth.
