6. We saw it.

We enjoyed it. I have a preference for the original because Natalie Wood. I was struck by how little has changed since 1961. We are still plagued with racism, sexism, and gun violence. And Rita Moreno is still a national treasure.

9. Why do they need to remake a movie that won 10 Academy Awards?

And had great filming techniques and sound? Just because few of the stars were Puerto Rican and the leads' singing was dubbed? Do you know that in one duet Marni Nixon dubbed both voices? It was great.

10. Yes, Marni Nixon did dub in the singing

Not sure why Spielberg remade it

11. To present a classic to a new audience

without slapping dark makeup on a bunch of white actors.

Because the success of La La Land and In the Heights (despite COVID-19) means that people might want to see musicals again.

Because Steven Spielberg has made his bones in Hollywood and his films have made $10 BILLION, without counting West Side Story or factoring in 8nflation. Steven gets what Steven wants.

15. I know about

a thriller from the mid sixties, Blood On Black Lace dir. Mario Bava, where Paul Frees dubbed all the male voices. Including American actor Cameron Mitchell. Don't know who dubbed the ladies voices.

12. We saw it with our son and his fiancee

We all really enjoyed it. Our son is a really good musician and played in the pit orchestra. He loves musical theater.
First time in a movie theater since 2019.

14. Now you went and did it. - I do *not* want to be a DebbieDowner.

Here's mine: https://democraticunderground.com/10181595987

That said, my new stuff here:
* Well, reprise this, why re-make almost all the same?

* I get SPIELBERG's reverence. but: It. was. DONE.

* The MUSIC is ALL.

* One of the earliest thoughts was to make the conflict Irish vs Jewish.

* Am gonna SAY it: "Woke" to make it more "authentic" sucks.

* SHAKESPEARE was a RE-MAKER to end all RE-MAKING.

18. Whew, I'm glad for your positive post. I should have kept out of a thread If there might

be me raining on other people's parade.

I meant to say that this version is fine, as much as the previous one, but that except for correcting some textual details it was the same. So anybody who saw the other one would not be having a new experience. I've got a couple of elderly relatives who will not be seeing this one because they have been satisfied with the other one all these years. For anybody who hasn't see it from before, it's fine.

I mean, the updated sound and visuals are fine, like upgrading a car or appliance. And the music can be heard all over YouTube with any number of wonderful orchestras, so...

I'll stop.

17. I saw the original movie

on B/W TV, with commercials in 2 parts. A couple of months later a nearby town showed it on the big screen so I took a bus ride. A technician was working on the electric and the manager went to him and and told him to hurry up, the audience was waiting. I looked around the empty theater and realized that I was the audience. LOL I loved it and hope to love the new one. I notice that Rita Moreno and another actress are winning and getting nominated for a lot of awards. John Astin, Simon Oakland and Ned Glass appeared in the original.
